Minecraft: Java Edition 1.8.9 was released on December 9, 2015, and is compatible with servers running versions 1.8 to 1.8.8. Despite having fewer features and no longer being officially supported (similar to Java Edition 1.7.10), it remains popular among minigame players and plugin servers. This continued use is largely due to widespread dislike of the Combat Update (1.9), which significantly changed PvP mechanics, and the relative instability of newer versions.

This was the last release to be compatible with a previous server version until 1.16.5. It also marked the final version released during the snapshot process of the next major update—until 1.16.5—and came out on the same day as snapshot 15w50a. It was the last version to feature Twitch integration services and the Super Secret Settings option. Interestingly, 1.8.9 also holds the record for the longest wait for a minor update to Java Edition, with 134 days having passed since 1.8.8 (released July 28, 2015).
