Description
Allays that feel like real little companions. Tame them, give them a home, put them to work, and take one along on your adventures. There are nine allay variants. Each one lives in its own part of the world and has its own power.
NeoForge 1.21.1 · Requires GeckoLib · Optional: Jade, Xaero's Minimap, Critters and Companions, Curios or Accessories, Starcatcher, Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes We've Gone
🚧 Work in progress: Allay Folks is still being actively built and expanded. New allays, jobs and features are added often, and some things may change between updates. Bugs or ideas? Message me on Discord: YETSHADOW.
Quick Start
- Find an allay. Look in its home biome, or craft an Allay Compass and follow it to the nearest allay home.
- Earn its trust. Wild allays are shy. Stand still with its favorite food in your hand and wait a few seconds. It comes over.
- Feed it. One bite and it's yours.
- Open its screen. Hold the Allay Interact key (Left Shift by default) and right-click it with an empty hand.
- Give it a home. Next to Home, press Set, then right-click an Allay Door or Allay Chest.
- Give it a job. Press Manage next to its job, then Change job, and put the job's tool in its hand slot.
- Keep track. Press K to see all your allays, wherever they are.
Crafting

| Item | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Allay Door | 5 planks (any wood) in a plus shape |
| Allay Chest | A chest + an Allay Door (shapeless) |
| Jar | A wooden slab over a glass block |
| Allay Compass | A compass surrounded by 8 amethyst shards |
The Allays
| Allay | Where it lives | Favorite food | Power (while it's out with you) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sky Allay | Plains, meadows, forests | Apple | Good company: no power, just a loyal friend |
| Axolotl Allay | Lush caves | Glow berries | Air bubble under water, pushes your boat |
| Bee Allay | Flower forests, meadows, sunflower plains | Honeycomb, honey bottle | Bees stay calm, sticky honey slows mobs |
| Blaze Allay | Nether wastes, basalt deltas | Blaze powder, fire charge | +1 Fire Protection, fire goes out faster |
| Ender Allay | Outer End islands | Chorus fruit, ender pearl, eye of ender | Makes ender pearls, your pearls don't hurt |
| Mushroom Allay | Mushroom fields, dark forests | Red or brown mushroom | Animals come to you, even shy ones |
| Sculk Allay | Some Ancient Cities | Echo shard | Blinds hostile mobs that see you |
| Slime Allay | Swamps, mangrove swamps | Slimeball | Falls bounce you, no damage up to 16 blocks |
| Undead Allay | Soul sand valleys | Nether wart | Fights the mobs that fight you |

Each variant has its own touch:
- Mushroom Allay: feed it a mushroom and its cap changes to that mushroom's color. This works with modded mushrooms too.
- Ender Allay: when it's idle, it sometimes teleports a few blocks away, like an Enderman.
- Blaze Allay: it has no wings and floats on two rings of spinning blaze rods instead, trailing a little smoke.
- Sculk Allay: its home is hidden inside an Ancient City.
- Undead Allay: give it up to 3 wither skeleton skulls and it transforms each time, ending as a tiny three-headed Wither.
Spawning: allay homes are generated in the world with an allay living inside. They also spawn in biomes from Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes We've Gone and other mods that use the shared biome tags. Vanilla allays (pillager outposts, woodland mansions, spawn eggs...) are replaced by the variant that fits the biome.
Shy wild allays: a wild allay hides in its home, or flies away, when you get too close. Sprinting scares it from far away, walking from closer, and standing still or sneaking only from right up close. Stand still holding its favorite food for about 5 seconds and it comes to you.
The Powers
A power only works while the allay is out with you (following you or on your shoulder). It's shown on the allay's screen.
| Power | What it does |
|---|---|
| Air Bubble (Axolotl) | When your head is under water, it blows you an air bubble. You breathe and swim faster. |
| Boat Push (Axolotl) | It pushes your boat from behind, so you go faster, and clears lily pads and frogspawn. |
| Jelly Boots (Slime) | Falls of up to 16 blocks bounce you without damage. Longer falls only do half damage. Sneak to land without bouncing. |
| Sculk Veil (Sculk) | Hostile mobs that see you are blinded and lose track of you, once each. Wardens and bosses are immune. |
| Spore Friend (Mushroom) | Animals within 10 blocks come to you. Cats, foxes and rabbits stop running away. |
| Bee Friend (Bee) | Bees never get angry at you. It throws honey at hostile mobs, and the puddle slows them to cobweb speed. |
| Pearl Maker (Ender) | Makes you an ender pearl every few minutes. Your own pearls don't hurt you. |
| Fire Ward (Blaze) | One extra level of Fire Protection, and fire on you goes out 3 times faster. |
| Grave Guard (Undead) | Fights the hostile mobs that hit you or that you hit, with a sword or bow you give it (no arrows needed). Wither skulls make it stronger, and with all 3 it shoots small wither skulls that don't break blocks. |
The Allay Screen
Hold Allay Interact and right-click your allay with an empty hand. It stays in place while the screen is open.

- Allay tab: its picture, job, power, favorite food, home and costume.
- Right-click the picture to pat it. Right-click it with an item on your cursor to feed it or give it the item.
- Follow me, Stay here or Send home.
- Click the button next to its name to rename it.
- Set or Move its home, and track it with the compass button (a mark on your screen, through walls).
- Job page (press Manage next to its job): its tool slot, Change job, Work chest, and the job's settings.
- Inventory tab: its 9 slots, plus its hand and its helmet.
- Every page has a gold (?) button that explains how it works. Hold Shift to see tooltips.
Your allays
Press K (rebindable), or the small allay button in your inventory, to see every allay you've tamed.
- What each one is doing and how far away it is. Hover a problem to see how to fix it.
- Manage opens its screen when it's within 24 blocks, or from any distance if it's following you (it comes to you first).
- Track marks it on your screen, through walls and from any distance. The mark goes away once you get there.
- A message log of what it told you lately: a tool broke, its chest is full...
Homes
Every allay needs a home: it sleeps there at night and works near it during the day. Each home holds one allay.
| Home | Recipe | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Allay Door | 5 planks in a plus shape | A round door you can place on any side of a block: a wall, the floor or the ceiling. |
| Allay Chest | A chest + an Allay Door | A real chest (27 slots, hoppers work, can be its allay's work chest) with a tiny room inside where the allay lives. It goes in and out through the lid. |

Moving in: in the allay's screen press Set next to Home and right-click the door or chest. You can also catch the allay in a Jar and right-click the home with it.
Both homes take the look of the allay living there, one per variant. They're animated: the allay peeks out now and then, and the lights inside really light up the area while it's home (the door's window, the chest's lantern and fairy lights as the lid opens).
Once it has a home, your allay:
- wanders near it and sleeps inside at night, in pajamas and a nightcap
- goes inside when it rains or thunders, or when a hostile mob comes near
- comes out in the morning to drink a mug of coffee
- answers when you knock: punch the door or chest (right-clicking the door knocks too). If it's out, it hurries home. If it's inside, it comes out to greet you, even at night in its pajamas.
Mine a home with Silk Touch to take the allay along with it.
Jobs
Give your allay a job in its screen (Manage > Change job), or hold Allay Interact and right-click it with the job's tool. It puts on matching work clothes and works within 32 blocks of its work chest, or of its home before it has one.
What it gathers goes into its 9-slot inventory. When that's full, or when it has had nothing to do for a few seconds, it takes it to its work chest. Pick the chest in its screen (Manage > Work chest), within 32 blocks of its home. It also takes what it needs (seeds, fuel, bottles...) from that chest.

| Job | Tool | What it does | Outfit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farmer | Hoe | Harvests ripe crops, melons, pumpkins, sugar cane and berries, and replants them. Works with most modded crops and fruit. | Straw hat |
| Lumberjack | Axe | Cuts down fully grown natural trees, clears the leaves and replants a sapling. Never touches player-placed logs or buildings. | Plaid shirt and fur trapper hat |
| Fisherman | Fishing rod | Fishes from the shore or a little boat: fish, junk and treasure. With Starcatcher, that mod's fish too. | Fisherman's hat and vest |
| Shepherd | Shears | Shears every sheep that has wool. | Shepherd coat and cap, with a crook |
| Collector | Hopper or bundle | Picks up items lying on the ground, like mob drops and saplings. | – |
| Miner | Pickaxe | Following you, it mines the ore it can see near you and hands the ore and XP to you. At home, it mines the ore around its home. Only you see a mark on the vein it's mining. Modded ores work too. | Miner's cap with a candle, overalls |
| Smelter | Flint and steel | Keeps the furnaces, smokers and blast furnaces around its chest smelting what's in the chest. | – |
| Beekeeper | Glass bottle | Collects honey from full beehives with bottles from its chest, or honeycomb with shears. | – |
| Rancher | Lead | Breeds animals with food from its chest, milks cows and goats with buckets, gathers eggs, and with a sword in its chest keeps each herd at its size. | – |
| Gardener | Bucket | Waters plants around your other allays' work areas, sometimes with a bone-meal effect. | Watering can |

Job settings: every job has settings on its Job page: how big its work area is, its work hours, when to unload, and the job's own options (replant, keep seeds, torches for the miner, which fuel to burn, herd sizes...). Some jobs have a list where you mark what to do first (★) or never (✖): ores, crops, trees, wool colours, things to smelt. Modded ones show up too. Copy and Paste settings between allays with the same job.
Tools matter. Without enchantments, allays work slowly. Efficiency and better tools help, but they're never faster than a player. Fortune, Silk Touch and Looting work too, and so do modded tools.
Tools wear out. Plain tools break, and the allay takes a spare from its inventory. Enchanted tools never break: when one is almost broken, the allay puts it away for you to repair and takes another.
Work hours: workers sleep at home at night. Rainy days are days off, except for the fisherman (rain is great fishing weather) and the miner.
Your Companion
You can own as many allays as you like, but only one can be your companion at a time. Your companion follows you or rides on your shoulder. Taming a wild allay makes it your companion right away.
Controls
Allay Interact is a key you can rebind in the controls menu. It's Left Shift by default.
| What you want | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Tame it | Right-click it with its favorite food |
| Pet it | Right-click it |
| Open its screen | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with an empty hand |
| Give it an item, tool or light | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with the item, or use its screen |
| Put it on your shoulder | Right-click it while it holds a light (torch, lantern…) |
| Use the station it carries | Right-click it |
| Put a helmet on it | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with the helmet (shears take it off) |
| Halloween costume | Hold Allay Interact and right-click it with a carved pumpkin (shears take it off) |
| Catch it in a jar | Right-click it with a Jar |
| See all your allays | Press K |
| Lost it? | Type /allayfolks call |
What your companion can do
- Shoulder riding: it sits on your shoulder, swaps sides and looks around.
- Light: while it holds a torch, lantern or any other light (modded ones too), it lights up the area around it.
- Portable stations: give it a chest, barrel, shulker box, ender chest, crafting table, stonecutter, smithing table, loom, cartography table, grindstone, anvil, enchanting table, furnace, smoker or blast furnace. Right-click it to open that block from anywhere. A furnace it carries keeps cooking.
- Teleports: it comes with you through commands, ender pearls, portals and waystones, even to another dimension.
- Lost allay?
/allayfolks callbrings your companion back to you, even from another dimension. No cheats needed. - Death guide: if it's with you when you die, it remembers where you fell and calls you over when you respawn. Right-click it and it puts on a hooded death robe, holds a scythe and a soul lantern, grows bone wings and leads you back to your items.
- Helmet: it can wear any helmet, modded ones included, and it protects it like a full set of that armor.
Jar
- Craft: a wooden slab over a glass block.
- Catch your tamed allay in the jar to carry it around. The tooltip shows which allay is inside and where its home is.
- Right-click a block with the filled jar to let the allay out. Sneak and right-click to place the jar as a block, with the allay flying around inside.
- In your inventory and hand, the jar shows the real animated allay or critter inside.
- Catch critters: an empty Jar also catches small mobs (about 0.5 × 0.5 blocks) from vanilla or any mod: silverfish, endermites, frogs, and the bugs from Critters and Companions. Datapacks can add mobs with the
allayfolks:jar_catchabletag.
Allay Compass
- Craft: a compass surrounded by 8 amethyst shards.
- Buy: from journeyman cartographers and wandering traders.
- Find: in chests in cartographer houses, pillager outposts and woodland mansions.
The compass points to the nearest allay home you haven't found yet, from anywhere in your inventory. When you reach a home it chimes and moves on to the next one.
- Height: teal-blue means you're at about the home's height. It turns purple the further above or below you are.
- Charm slot: with Curios or Accessories, wear it in the charm slot to get a small compass on your HUD.
Halloween
From Oct 20 to Nov 3, every allay dresses up in its own costume, wild ones included. On any other day, give your allay a carved pumpkin to put it on.
| Allay | Costume |
|---|---|
| Sky Allay | Witch, with a long robe |
| Axolotl Allay | Pumpkin |
| Mushroom Allay | Scarecrow |
| Sculk Allay | Ghost |
| Slime Allay | Frankenstein |
| Undead Allay | Mummy, at every skull stage |
| Bee Allay | Spider, with cobweb wings and eight legs |
| Blaze Allay | Ladybug |
| Ender Allay | Vampire, with bat wings and little fangs |

Costumed allays keep working and now and then play a little prank in a squeaky voice. Sweet dreams... during the Halloween dates, going to sleep has a small chance of a nightmare. It's only a vision.
Wandering Trader Allay

Once in a while, a Wandering Trader Allay visits: a random variant in a traveller's hat and backpack. It sells everything a wandering trader does, plus Jars, Allay Compasses and Allay Doors, and leaves after 2 days. It can't be tamed.
Little Details
- Smooth, lively animations: allays breathe, look around, blink (sometimes twice) and flap with a quick downstroke and a slow, twisting recovery.
- Idle allays drift over to look at nearby animals, and sometimes bring them a flower, or give one to another allay.
- Play a jukebox and every allay within 32 blocks flies over to dance. Amethyst duplication still works.
- Now and then, an idle allay with no job hops on a horse or another big animal for a ride.
- You can eat cake straight from an allay's hands, one slice at a time.
- Allays hold a big dripleaf umbrella when it rains.
- Jade: tooltips show an allay's owner, job and work chest, and who lives in a home.
- Xaero's Minimap: each allay has its own small icon on the map.
- Everything is in the Allay Folks creative tab.
Config
config/allayfolks-common.toml lets you turn features on or off. This is useful for modpacks.
| Section | Options |
|---|---|
| World | Replace vanilla allays · Generate allay homes · Sculk homes in Ancient Cities and how rare they are (ancientCityHomeSpacing) · Minimum distance between homes (allayHomeMinDistance, default 96) · Compass trades |
| Companion | Death guide · Following you through teleports |
| Jobs | Turn each job on or off · How far a miner may go from you (minerRange) and how far it looks for ore (minerSearch) · Rancher herd size (rancherHerdSize) |
| Display (per player) | Miner's vein mark: outline, ping, both or off |
Notes
- Requires GeckoLib.
- Allays can't be hurt by mobs, players, fire, falls or drowning. If one falls out of the world, it comes back.
- Allays can't be leashed.
- Multiplayer: other players can pet your allays, but only you can give them items or orders. While you're offline your companion waits, and it rejoins you when you log back in.
