# Ambient Whispers — Ambient Particles
Vanilla Minecraft's night forests feel too quiet, and swamps feel too empty.
**Ambient Whispers** fills that space with 9 kinds of subtle ambient particles. **Client-side only** — nothing needed on the server, works in multiplayer for each player who installs it.
> **"Like real fireflies"** — Fireflies are the size of the real insect (≈3–5 cm), appear only at night, spread evenly up to 10 chunks (160 blocks), and flash every 1.4–4 s.
## ✨ 9 particle effects
| Particle | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| **Firefly** | Night (time 13,000–23,000) | Evenly spread up to 160 blocks, gold↔lime per individual, glowing trail on flash |
| **Moon Mote** | Night + forest biome, sky light < 12 | Pale blue, drifts upward |
| **Leaf Drift** | Near leaves | Gold/orange, slowly sinks |
| **Pollen Glow** | Near flowers | Yellow/orange, wide sway |
| **Frost Spark** | Snow & ice | Very rare, 50% opacity — subtle only |
| **Ember Mote** | Magma, netherrack, basalt, blackstone | Orange/red, never rises above 0.65 block |
| **Aurora Mote** | Night + snow/ice | Teal/emerald, rising |
| **Spore** | Mushroom blocks / dark forest | Long-lived drifting spores |
| **Deadwood Mist** | Podzol, coarse dirt, mangrove roots, mud, logs | Large faint mist rising from the ground |
*Water Spark is registered but currently not spawned.*
## 🔥 Fireflies
- **Night only** — they fade out within 1 second after dawn (`firefliesNightOnly`).
- **Up to 10 chunks (160 blocks)** — the fill radius adapts to your render distance; density is even from your feet to the horizon.
- **Realistic size** — ≈2.9–5.0 cm by default, distance-compensated (1–1.8×) so they stay visible as tiny points far away.
- **Flash pattern** — instant rise, 0.8–1.6 s decay, every 1.4–4.0 s, with a 15% double-flash. Size barely changes, so the light never "blooms".
- **Lifetime 6–24 s**, each individual pulses on its own cycle.
- **35% density over water** compared to land.
- 6% chance of a 2–3 firefly cluster; 30% hover 1.6–4.2 blocks above the ground so grass doesn't hide them.
## ⚙️ Configuration
`config/ambientparticles.json` is generated on first launch.
| Option | Range | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| toggles (`fireflies`, `spores`, …) | true/false | true | Enable/disable each effect |
| `density` | 0.5 – 2.5 | 1.5 | Overall count (2.0 → up to 680 fireflies) |
| `firefliesNightOnly` | true/false | true | Night only |
| `nightFireflyBoost` | 1.0 – 4.0 | 2.5 | Night multiplier (2.5 = 1.0×) |
| `fireflySizeScale` | 0.2 – 3.0 | 1.0 | Firefly size multiplier |
| `fireflyFarScale` | 0 – 3.0 | 0.8 | Far-distance size compensation (0 = off) |
| `fireflyGlow` | 0.5 – 2.5 | 1.0 | Firefly brightness multiplier |
**★ No restart needed** — edit and save the file; changes apply within ~2 seconds.
## 📥 Installation
1. Install **Fabric Loader** (0.19.0+)
2. Download **Fabric API**
3. Drop both jars into your `mods` folder
**Requires**: Minecraft **26.2**, Fabric Loader ≥ 0.19.0, Fabric API
## 🖥️ Performance
- When every effect is at its cap, the spawn scan is skipped entirely (≈0 cost while standing still).
- Reused coordinates and single-pass block checks cut block lookups per scan by 4× or more.
- Verify with `/spark profiler`.
