Back to Level Zero
Remember when the world went from bedrock at Y 0 up to the sky at Y 255? Back to Level Zero brings those classic 1.16.5 Y-levels back, while keeping all the newer features you love: Ancient Cities, the Deep Dark, Trial Chambers, Sulfur Caves, Lush Caves, Dripstone Caves, deepslate and more.
When Minecraft 1.17/1.18 dropped the bottom of the world down to Y -64 and raised the sky, a lot of players on older laptops and lower-powered PCs felt the difference. Back to Level Zero gives you a smaller, lighter world that feels like the old days, without losing the new content.
✨ What You Get
⛏️ Bedrock is back at Y 0
- The bottom of the Overworld is Y 0 again, just like 1.16.5.
- Y 0 is always solid bedrock: no holes, no gaps, no falling into the void. Ever.
- The familiar rough bedrock layer sits above it from Y 1 to Y 4.
🏔️ Build limit back to Y 255
- The Overworld runs from Y 0 to Y 255, the classic build height.
- Mountains and hills finish naturally before the limit, so nothing generates above it.
🪨 Deepslate where it belongs
- Deepslate fills the bottom of the world up to around Y 26, then blends into stone and stops by Y 35.
- Ores in that layer become their deepslate versions, as you'd expect.
💎 The classic 1.16.5 ore levels
| Ore | Found between | Best level |
|---|---|---|
| 💎 Diamond | Y 1 to 16 | Y 11 to 12 |
| 🔴 Redstone | Y 1 to 15 | Y 11 |
| 🟡 Gold | Y 0 to 31 | Anywhere in range (any height in Badlands) |
| ⚪ Iron | Y 0 to 63 | Y 16 to 52 |
| 🔵 Lapis Lazuli | Y 14 to 32 | Anywhere in range |
| ⚫ Coal | Y 0 to 127 | Anywhere in range |
| 🟢 Emerald | Y 4 to 32 | Mountain biomes only |
Copper didn't exist in 1.16.5, so it keeps its normal levels.
🔥 Lava at Y 10 and below
- Caves fill with lava at Y 10 and below, just like the old days, so Y 11 is the safe strip-mining level again.
🏛️ Ancient Cities moved up
- Ancient Cities still generate, now raised so their floor sits above Y 5.
🗝️ Trial Chambers moved up
- In the 1.21.1 and 26.3 NeoForge versions, Trial Chambers still generate, now raised out of the old Y -40 to -20 zone so they start between Y 15 and Y 35.
- They always stay at least 10 blocks above the bedrock floor, so the whole structure is there to explore.
Trial Chambers don't exist in Minecraft 1.20.1, so this only applies to the 1.21.1 and 26.3 versions.
🟡 Sulfur Caves moved up
- In the 26.3 NeoForge version, the new Sulfur Caves still generate, now squeezed up into the shallower world above Y 5 along with the other cave biomes.
- Their own steaming pools, springs and geysers still appear as normal.
- The classic lava layer at Y 10 and below stays out of Sulfur Caves and Lush Caves, so they're pretty safe to explore all the way down.
Sulfur Caves only exist in Minecraft 26.3, so this only applies to the 26.3 version.
🌿 Cave biomes still exist
- The Deep Dark, Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves are squeezed up into the shallower world above Y 5, so you can still find them all.
- The Deep Dark mostly appears under hills and mountains, and has much less sculk spread through it, so ordinary caves at diamond level stay looking like caves. Ancient Cities keep all their own sculk.
🌀 Nether Portals that make sense
- When you come back from the Nether and the game builds you a new portal in the Overworld, it will always appear at Y 5 or higher, never below the bedrock.
🦴 Nothing lost from the deep
Features that used to live below Y 0 have been moved up so you don't miss out:
- Extra deep dungeons and tuff blobs are now in the deepslate layer.
- Diamond-ore fossils now appear between Y 5 and Y 24.
💻 Will it help my game run better?
Back to Level Zero makes the world itself smaller and lighter: each chunk is 256 blocks tall instead of 384, and the busy deep underground below Y 0 is gone. You can expect:
- ✅ Faster chunk generation when exploring (less stutter when flying or sprinting into new land).
- ✅ Less memory used and smaller world saves.
- ✅ Fewer blocks to light and update.
Frame rate on the surface will be about the same, since the game already hides solid underground blocks you can't see. For the best results on a lower-powered machine, pair it with performance mods such as Embeddium, FerriteCore, ModernFix and Entity Culling.
🤝 Compatibility
- ✅ Alex's Caves Continued: supported in v1.20.1 on Forge! Its cave biomes and the buildings inside them (Gingerbread Town, Volcano, Forlorn Bridge and more) are moved up into the new deep cave layer. The caves may feel a little more compact than normal, as there's less depth to fill.
- ✅ Works with biome mods that use the normal biome system, such as TerraBlender-based mods. Such as our own Far Flung Forests mod.
- ❌ YUNG's Better Caves: is not supported.
- ⚠️ Mods that change world height or terrain shape (for example Tectonic) will clash with this mod.
- ⚠️ Ores or structures from other mods that only spawn below Y 0 will not appear.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: New Worlds Only!
- Only use Back to Level Zero on a brand new world.
- Do not add it to an existing world. Everything below Y 0 and above Y 255 would be lost.
- Do not remove it from a world made with it. The game would expect the old layout and the bottom of your world could break.
- On a server, install it on both the server and every player's game.
