Description

BearMetal Carts

BearMetal Carts aims to finish implementing the experimental minecart changes in an accessible, seamless way.

Features

Minecart chunk loading

Minecarts in motion submit chunkloading tickets for the nearest chunks that they will traverse for a duration of two seconds. When a minecart comes to a stop, it loads a 3x3 chunk area centered on the chunk it stopped in for a duration of 30 seconds.

Inelastic collisions

Instead of minecarts stopping when they collide with another, they will instead continue moving forward together at a slower speed. This allows furnace minecarts to actually push minecarts.

As a note: this system is kind of unstable at the moment. While furnace carts will push in a chain, there is a limit before it starts collapsing on itself as the resistance is too high. From testing, this usually works itself out over time, but is worth being aware of.

Refuelable furnace carts

Furnace carts can hold one spare coal or charcoal and will automatically use it when it runs out. In order to add it, you must use a hopper.

If a hopper adds fuel to a stationary furnace cart, it will resume moving in the direction it was last heading. This is also true if you place a cart below a fuel hopper, but in this case it uses the direction you were facing instead.

Tiered carts

This mod adds recipes for additional tiers of minecarts. These tiers are either faster or slower than a standard minecart and have a higher mass. These tiers apply to all minecart variants (except command block and spawner minecarts).

Max Speeds for each tier

Tier Nominal Blocks/second
Vanilla 0.4 8
Copper 0.6 12
Gold 0.8 16
Netherite 1.2 24
Exposed Copper 0.2 4
Weathered Copper 0.1 2
Oxidized Copper 0.05 1

Commands and gamerules

There is one command: /bmc which is used to control the attributes of the minecarts (currently only applies to maxspeed).

There are three gamerules: bearmetalcarts:allow_chunkloading, bearmetalcarts:mobile_loading_duration and bearmetalcarts:station_loading_duration. These all control the chunkloading behaviors of the carts.

Prerequisites

  • Experimental minecart changes enabled on the world
  • Fabric API

Notes

This mod does not need to be installed on the client, however installing it on the client enables the different cart textures for each tier.

Furnace minecarts are intentionally slower than powered rails, this is not a bug but rather a mirror of the vanilla behavior.

The tiered minecarts are all normal carts under the hood. This mod just loads the data from the CustomData on the entity. This means that anyone with permissions to use the /data command can affect the behavior of the minecarts.

Balance

I haven't quite landed on a good balance of materials required for the recipes. Ideally, they should be more expensive as they dramatically shift the functionality, but also the thought that higher speeds should be more accessible is not lost on me. Consider these recipes not final.
