About

Description

You sit down in the evening for some Minecraft. It's only 9pm, and you tell yourself you can play until midnight. But before you know it, it's 4am and you've got work in just a few hours!

This mod lets you set a bedtime. The server will ban you at that time and you'll stay banned for 8 hours.

This has no effect on the in-game bed. It's a server-side mod that bans you; it's about helping you get more sleep in the real-world.

This does not work in single player, it is only for dedicated server. I made this for myself and I don't play in single player, but it would be possible to add. It does not need to be installed on the client and installing it in the client does nothing extra.

In-game commands:

/bedtime timezone US/Central

Set your timezone. This is needed because the server might be in a different time zone than you. Only needs to be done the first time, the server will remember your player's timezone.

/bedtime set 12:30am

Set your bedtime tonight. This sets your bedtime for today. It needs to be done every day that you want a bedtime. More on that philosophy below.

Server only command:

/bedtime cancel Notch

I don't know what this command does or why you would ever use it. It seems like it shouldn't exist. It probably does nothing. You should never log into the server admin console and run it. If you do, you're a bad person.

You must set your bedtime each day. There is not an option to schedule a repeating bedtime. This is partly because I couldn't think of a good interface for setting up a schedule, and partly because my bed time changes day-to-day, but mostly because I want us to work on self control and this is a small step to do it. The whole reason we've got to use this mod is because we lack self control when we're in the moment. But at least we can have a little discipline for our future self. At least for me, I can't stop myself in the present time, but I am happy to set up a bedtime for the future. And the ban is a wake-up call that does get me to leave the computer. When you type your bedtime in the game, you are firming that commitment to yourself that you're going to go to bed at a reasonable time, and when you achieve logging off at that time (even if it takes a ban) it still gives you a little joy from doing the responsible thing.
