About
Description
Vanilla's closed captions tell you that a sound played, but not where it came from - and the small gray text in the corner is easy to miss. Better Subtitles replaces the whole thing with something built for actually understanding your surroundings.
Features
• Directional pings: a short chevron flashes around your crosshair pointing exactly toward every new sound, with a decorative dotted arc and the sound's name labeled right next to it. • A color for every sound: twenty hand-picked colors (crimson, autumn orange, sea green, aqua, indigo, and more) are assigned per sound, so different events stay visually distinct instead of blurring into a wall of gray text. • Outlined caption text, readable over any background with no boxy backdrop needed (an optional background box is available too). • Smart filtering: your own footsteps and your own block breaking/placing never spam the screen - only sounds that carry real information do. Purely cosmetic combat flourish sounds (critical hit, etc.) are filtered out too. • Anti-overlap stacking: several sounds arriving from a similar direction at once fan out into concentric rings instead of piling on top of each other. • A settings menu with a live preview: press U (rebindable in Options > Controls > Better Subtitles) to open it - every toggle and slider updates a live mock-up right there in the menu. Spans two pages (Appearance, Size and Timing) with a page-flip button. • Tied to the game's own subtitle option: turn on Options > Accessibility > Closed Captions and this mod's version is what you see - no separate on/off switch to keep in sync. • Localized - ships with English and Turkish, falls back to English otherwise. • Client-side only. No server installation required, safe to use on any server.
Requirements
• Fabric Loader • Fabric API
Notes
Built as an accessibility-first redesign of the vanilla subtitle system, not a cosmetic skin - the goal is that a player relying on captions instead of audio gets more usable information than someone with sound on, not less.
