Description
Play your singleplayer worlds with friends anywhere in the world: no servers, no addresses, no copy and paste.
CinderLink adds a friends list to Minecraft. Add a friend once with a code, and from then on you can see when they're online, see when they're hosting a world, and join them with one click. Under the hood it works like Open to LAN, except your friends don't have to be on your network.
- Friends list on the title screen and pause menu, showing each friend's face and whether they're online, offline or hosting
- One-click join: when a friend is hosting for you, a Join button appears next to their name
- No addresses, ever: nothing to copy, paste or type in. Connection details stay hidden inside the mod
- You choose who can join: every time you open your world, pick All friends, Chosen friends or Invite only
- Fast: friend requests, accepts and "now hosting" usually show up within a couple of seconds
- No server to run, nothing to sign up for: CinderLink needs no website, account or company server of its own
- Your skin on the main menu: your character stands beside the menu buttons and looks at your mouse (can be turned off)
- Client-only: no server mod needed, works in any modpack
🔥 How it works
- Click Friends, then Copy My Code, and send your Cinder Code to a friend however you like.
- They click Add Friend and paste it. You get a request in-game; click Accept.
- To host, open the pause menu, choose Open to LAN, set Friends to who you want, and click Start LAN World.
- Your friends see Hosting: Your World in their list. They click Join and they're in.
- Only friends you picked can join, and only with their real, verified Minecraft account. Anyone else is turned away before they see your world.
- Your status is encrypted. Only your friends can tell whether you're online or hosting. Nobody else can see it, fake it or link it to you.
- A Cinder Code isn't an address and can't be used to find you. Reset Code makes old codes stop working without affecting your friends.
- No IP addresses in your logs, on either the host's side or the joining side, so sharing a log file for help is safe.
- It respects network rules. If a school or workplace network blocks it, CinderLink simply shows the friends list as unavailable. It never tries to get around blocks.
- Open source under the MIT license, so anyone can check exactly what it does.
As with any Minecraft multiplayer, a friend who joins your world connects to your computer directly, so their game has to know your connection address. CinderLink never shows it to them.
- Everyone needs CinderLink installed, both the player hosting and the friends joining
- A legitimate Minecraft: Java Edition account (logged in through the official launcher or a launcher that signs in with Microsoft)
- To host for friends outside your home: a router with UPnP turned on (most home routers have it on by default) or an IPv6 connection. If neither is available, CinderLink tells you your world "can't be reached", and you can still play with people on the same network. Joining someone else's world works on any normal connection.
Found under Mods > CinderLink > Config:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enable friends list | Turn CinderLink off completely. When off, it makes no network connections at all. |
| Use UPnP port mapping | Lets CinderLink ask your router to open your world while you host, and close it again when you stop. |
| Allow IPv6 direct connections | Offers friends an IPv6 connection when you have one. |
| Show hosting toasts | Pops up a notification when a friend starts hosting. |
| Show your player model | Shows your character on the main menu. |
Do I need to install this on a server? No. CinderLink is for playing your own worlds with friends. It does nothing on dedicated servers.
Can it be added to modpacks? Yes. Each player's identity and friends list are stored in their own user folder, outside the game instance, so a pack never ships anyone's friends or codes.
Why isn't my friend's world showing up? Make sure they chose Open to LAN and picked you under Friends; it starts at LAN only every time on purpose. If their world shows as "can't be reached", their router isn't letting connections in (UPnP is off, or their internet provider shares one address between many customers).
Does it work on school or work networks? Usually not, and that's intentional: if a network blocks it, CinderLink doesn't try to get around the block.
Does it work offline or in "cracked" launchers? No. Joining requires a verified Minecraft account, which is part of what keeps strangers out.
