Description
Compatible Delight – BD Loot Fix
An unofficial compatibility patch for ButchersDelight, built to stop it from silently breaking vanilla and other mods' drops when they're installed together. Works for Minecraft 1.20.1 (Forge).
Original mod & credits
- ButchersDelight — the original mod, by Onuadan (created with MCreator):
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/butchers-delight
- ButchersDelight Foods — a related add-on by the same author, optionally supported.
All credit for the original mods belongs to their author. This is a fan-made compatibility patch — not a reupload, fork, or replacement. It contains no assets, code, or content from the original mods, does not redistribute them, and requires you to download and install the original ButchersDelight from its official page.
How this differs from the original
- It adds no animals, items, blocks, models, or recipes — nothing playable.
- It is a small compatibility patch (a few Mixins + one loot-table fix + a config file) that changes how the original behaves only when it is combined with other mods.
- It does not replace the original: with this patch removed, ButchersDelight behaves exactly as it always did.
- Concretely, it stops the original from cancelling animal deaths, fixes the cleaver's bonus damage so other mods' killer-based drops work, restores the loot tables the original empties, adds optional cross-mod integration and a config toggle, and lets an empty hand retrieve intact carcasses — nothing more.
Why this mod exists
ButchersDelight changes how animals die — and that causes several problems when other mods are present:
- Animals stop dropping their normal loot. On death, ButchersDelight cancels the vanilla death event and removes the animal, then spawns its own carcass items. Because the death is cancelled, the standard death routine never runs: no vanilla drops, and other mods that hook death/loot never see a proper kill.
- Killer-based drops from other mods fail. ButchersDelight's cleaver deals an extra burst of damage (80% chance: +20 damage, +6 vs hoglins) using a source-less damage instance. That burst is usually the killing blow, so the loot context has no killer — and every "who killed this?" drop silently breaks. For example, Kaleidoscope Cookery's oil from pigs and Farmer's Delight's ham/knife-gated drops never appear.
- Overridden loot tables. ButchersDelight replaces the vanilla sheep and strider loot tables with empty ones (a
brown_mushroomx0 entry), so sheep and striders stop dropping their normal loot. ButchersDelight Foods does the same to the sheep table (astonex0 entry).
What this mod does
- Lets animals die normally. It blocks the death-event cancellation and the forced entity removal, so the standard death routine runs and all vanilla / other-mod loot is preserved — while ButchersDelight's own carcass items still spawn.
- Restores killer attribution. The cleaver's ownerless bonus damage is re-attributed to the actual attacker (keeping its damage type and values), so other mods' killer-based drops work again when you butcher animals with the cleaver.
- Restores the overridden loot tables. ButchersDelight's and ButchersDelight Foods' empty sheep/strider tables are replaced with the vanilla 1.20.1 tables. Detection is content-based: only the real empty overrides are touched, so datapack edits and other mods' tables are never overwritten.
- Integration with other mods (enabled by default). When Kaleidoscope Cookery and/or Farmer's Delight are installed, the cleaver is automatically tagged as a kitchen knife / knife so their drops and recipes trigger with it — no setup required.
- Cleaver balance tweak (enabled by default, can be disabled). The cleaver's attack damage is raised to be competitive with a Farmer's Delight iron knife, while its low durability and slower swing keep it in check.
- Retrieves intact carcasses with an empty hand (enabled by default, can be disabled). Right-clicking an intact carcass with an empty hand picks it back up: a carcass hanging on a hook is removed and its carcass item returned, with the hook left in place so it can be reused; a small animal carcass lying on the ground (chicken, rabbit, strider) is removed and its carcass item returned. Large carcasses lying on the ground are deliberately left alone — mine them as usual. Only unprocessed carcasses are affected, so this cannot be used to duplicate a hide or undo butchering progress.
Requirements & configuration
- Required: ButchersDelight (not bundled — download it from its official page). Optional: Kaleidoscope Cookery, Farmer's Delight, ButchersDelight Foods — the patch works fine without them.
- All fixes and integrations are enabled by default. The two switches in
config/bdlootfix-common.tomlarerestore_vanilla_loot_tables(default on) andcleaver_balance(default on), andpickup_carcasses(default on). On dedicated servers, keep client and server configs the same.
