Description
Grit & Gears
Build it. Fuel it. Drive it into the ground.
Grit & Gears adds a drivable, oil-powered drilling rig that you assemble yourself from real parts. Find crude oil, pump it out of the ground, fuel up, and tunnel through stone on your own set of tracks.
Build your rig.
Craft an Assembly Table and combine parts into a finished Drill Rig: chassis, engine, fuel tank, drill head, tracks and cabin. Add optional parts like a Cargo Bay, a Gearbox and Headlights. Every part you choose is visible on the rig, from the copper intakes on a Mk II engine to the second stacked tank on a Mk III.
- Chassis, engine and fuel tank come in Mk I, Mk II and Mk III
- Drill heads in iron, diamond and netherite: each digs faster than the last
- The Upgrade Bench lets you swap or add parts on a finished rig without losing the rest
Find oil, pump it, burn it.
Crude oil is the lifeblood of the rig. Look for black pools of oil on the surface, ringed with tarred dirt, or dig down to find sealed pockets of it underground. Place an Oil Pump on a pool and let it work, then fill the rig's tank with a bucket. The pump has a moving arm, bubbling ink and its own sounds.
Drive and drill.
- W / S drive, A / D turn on the spot, R switches the drill on and off
- Animated tracks and spinning wheels, an engine that changes pitch with your speed, and a drill you can hear grinding against hard rock
- Drills like a pickaxe: stone, ore and dirt come out as items straight into the cargo hold (open it with B, or sneak + right-click from outside)
- Drilling heats the engine. Watch the dashboard, let it cool, or throw a bucket of water over it before it overheats
- Drill heads wear down like tools and can be repaired on an anvil or swapped on the bench
Radars.
Install a Mob Radar or an Ore Radar with the Upgrade Bench, press V, and see everything nearby marked through the walls. Each scan costs a little fuel, and the modules wear out, so use them wisely.
Survive the heat.
Driving through lava damages the hull. Fit Lava Plating and the rig glows with molten veins and shrugs it off for a while.
Make it yours!
Dye your rig with any of the 16 dye colours. Scrape the paint off again with an axe or shears.
Recipes: the three machines
Everything starts with these. All three use ordinary materials (I = iron ingot, C = copper ingot).
Assembly Table: iron, copper and a crafting table
I I I
C T C T = crafting table
I _ I
Upgrade Bench: copper, an anvil, iron and a piston
C A C
I P I A = anvil, P = piston

Oil Pump: copper, iron and a bucket
_ C _
I B I B = bucket

The parts themselves are crafted too (chassis, engine, tank, drill head and more), so a recipe viewer such as JEI or EMI shows you the way.
