Description

Handy Rat: Storage Pet

A pack rat that follows you everywhere, wearing saddlebag chests.

Handy Rat gives you a little companion whose whole job is carrying your stuff. Strap saddlebags on it and it becomes walking storage. Clip charms onto the bags and it picks up what you drop, runs full loads home to your chests, sniffs out loot, keeps watch, and even makes camp with you at night.

It's simple on purpose: no machines, no config maze, just a rat and its bags. It works on its own, and it works amazingly with Handy Backpacks.

Getting a rat

Find one. Rats live in forests, taigas, savannas, plains, meadows and around plains villages, in ones and twos.

Tame it. Feed it cheese or bread. Each bite has a 1 in 3 chance to win it over. Craft cheese from a milk bucket (one bucket makes three), and eat it yourself too.

No rats around? Craft a Rat Nest (wheat around a piece of cheese, with a chest underneath) and place it. A wild rat moves in within a minute or so. Handy for skyblock, odd biomes and modpacks.

Right-click your rat with an empty hand to make it sit or follow. It follows you through portals into every dimension, no charm needed.

It never dies. A tamed rat that takes a fatal hit is knocked out for 30 seconds instead, and its bags are untouched. Feed it to heal it.

Saddlebags

Right-click your tamed rat with a saddlebag to strap it on. Sneak + right-click the rat to open its bags.

Saddlebag Slots Charm slots Fetch reach Scavenger range Leather 27 4 6 blocks 32 blocks Iron 36 5 8 blocks 48 blocks Diamond 45 6 10 blocks 64 blocks Netherite 54 7 (every charm) 12 blocks 96 blocks, and fireproof

Upgrade a saddlebag by crafting it with iron or diamonds around it, or netherite at a smithing table. Everything inside and every charm stays put. Use shears on the rat to take the bag off, contents and all.

The bag screen has buttons to sort, store your inventory (the hotbar stays put) and take everything. Look at your rat and its name tag shows how full it is, like Henry (43/54).

Charms

Charms clip onto the saddlebag in the bag screen. Each one has an on/off switch, and some have a filter: click the funnel, then click a filter slot while holding an item to add it.

Fetch. Your rat runs over to dropped items and stows them. It ignores things you threw away. Its filter picks which items; its reach grows with the bag.

Void. Deletes junk that Fetch picks up, if it's on the Void filter. Rotten flesh, cobblestone, gone. An empty filter deletes nothing.

Compacting. Squashes nuggets into ingots and ingots into blocks inside the bags. Only things that can be crafted back.

Courier. When the bags are three-quarters full, your rat takes the load home to the chests and barrels around its Rat Bed. If home is close it runs there. If it's far, it digs a burrow and dives in, pops up at home to unload (the chest lids open if you're there to see it), then pops out of the ground beside you and shakes off the dirt. It tells you what it delivered. If the chests are full it says so once and waits until you make room.

Scavenger. Your rat sniffs out unopened loot chests, suspicious sand and gravel, and trial vaults you haven't opened yet. It never tells you coordinates. It shows you: it freezes and stares toward the loot like a pointing dog, paws at the ground when it's below you, and hops and stands up when it's above. The closer the loot, the twitchier it gets. Pick Loot on the whistle wheel and it trots ahead and leads you there, waiting when you fall behind.

Guard. Fights like a tamed wolf: bites whatever attacks you or whatever you attack. It leaves creepers alone.

Camp. At night, right-click your rat with a hay bale and it builds a straw bed beside you. You both sleep on it. The hay isn't used up, it doesn't move your spawn point, and the straw is cleared away in the morning.

The whistle

Craft a Homing Whistle (two iron ingots and a stick) and keep it anywhere in your inventory.

Hold R to open the whistle wheel. Point at an option and let go:

Call: come here and follow. Sit: sit and wait, or follow again. Home: go to the Rat Bed and unload there. Loot: lead me to the loot (needs Scavenger). Camp: build the straw bed (needs Camp, at night). Bags: open the saddlebags from up to 16 blocks away.

Anything your rat can't do right now is greyed out, with the reason. The wheel talks to the rat you're looking at, or your nearest one. (R can be changed in Controls.)

Holding the whistle, right-click to call your rats, and sneak + right-click to send them home. Use it on a Rat Bed to make that bed home for your rats nearby.

A rat with a personality

Your rat talks. Name it with a name tag and it uses its name: "Henry the storage rat is heading home to drop off your stuff." Every event has a few different lines. Big moments go to chat, small ones to the action bar. A button in the bag screen switches between chatty, quiet and silent.

It also has its own animations: digging, shaking off dirt, pointing, curling up to sleep.

Better with Handy Backpacks

Handy Rat never needs Handy Backpacks. But install both and they link up:

Tabs between them. A rat tab on the backpack screen opens your rat's bags, and a backpack tab on the rat screen goes back. Backpack upgrades fit your rat. Drop these into the saddlebag's charm slots: Lantern: your rat glows like a torch. Auto-Feed: your rat eats cheese or bread from its own bags when it's hurt, and wakes up sooner when knocked out. Stack: 99 per slot in the rat's bags. Crafting: a crafting grid right on the rat's screen. Whistle in your backpack. A whistle in your backpack counts for the whistle wheel. Multiplayer

Only the owner can give commands or change the bags. Let friends open them with /rat trust <player> (and /rat untrust, /rat trusted). Install on both the server and every client.

FAQ

Do I need Handy Backpacks? No. Everything above works without it; the backpack extras only switch on when both are installed.

Can I have more than one rat? Yes. Each one has its own bags and charms. The whistle wheel talks to the one you're looking at, or your nearest.

What if my rat gets hurt? It gets knocked out for 30 seconds instead of dying, and nothing in its bags is lost.

Forge or NeoForge? Older versions? Not right now. Handy Rat is Fabric and 26.2 only, kept small so it can move to new versions quickly.

Can I use it in my modpack? Yes, go right ahead. Please credit me if possible.k
