Description
Headlampify
Tired of spamming torches in caves? Headlampify adds a headlamp slot to your inventory. Put any light-emitting block in it and your head becomes a moving light source.
How it works
- A new headlamp slot sits beside the player model, level with your helmet slot. In creative mode it's in the inventory tab, opposite the offhand slot.
- Any light-emitting block works. Your headlamp shines at the same light level the block gives off when placed:
- Torch: 14
- Lantern, glowstone, sea lantern, jack o'lantern: 15
- Soul torch, soul lantern: 10
- Redstone torch: 7
- The Light block uses whatever level is set on the item.
- Smooth dynamic lighting. The light follows your head and fades out with distance like normal light. It changes gradually as you move instead of jumping from block to block. It lights up terrain, mobs, items and particles.
- Shift-click a light block to move it into an empty headlamp slot. Wearable blocks like jack o'lanterns still go to your helmet slot first.
- Your headlamp is saved with your player data. It drops on death like the rest of your inventory, unless
keepInventoryis on.
What doesn't work
Only blocks that give off light by default can go in the slot. That rules out:
- Candles and redstone lamps, which are unlit as items.
- Items that aren't blocks at all, like lava buckets, glowstone dust and blaze rods.
Multiplayer
- Singleplayer: just install it.
- Servers: install it on the server and every client that wants to use or see headlamps. You'll see other players' headlamps light up the world around them.
- Vanilla clients can still join a Headlampify server without crashing. They won't see the headlamp slot or anyone's headlamp light.
- Client-only doesn't work: installing it on your client alone and joining a vanilla server does nothing. The server has to handle the slot.
Compatibility
- Sodium & Iris: fully supported, shaders included. With Sodium installed, the headlamp is lit per vertex, so the light fades even more smoothly.
- Other dynamic lighting mods (e.g. LambDynamicLights) haven't been tested alongside Headlampify.
Requirements
- Fabric Loader
- Fabric API
Performance
Like other dynamic lighting mods, Headlampify rebuilds the nearby chunk sections as a headlamp moves, so lighting stays up to date. This only happens near players who are wearing a headlamp and moving.
