Description
What is this?
This mod is a significantly faster version of Tan's Huge Trees, branched off a recent development of Tan's mod (and with his permission), created to run an experiment in attempting to improve world generation performance, with the Au Naturel modpack (and relatively vanilla minecraft) as the primary testing grounds.
It aims to generate all the same beautiful, massive trees as the original - it just does it quickly and more efficiently.
Why does this exist?
In survival modpacks with many terrain-altering mods, world generation can become increasingly slow. The time required by Tan's to generate tree positions and placed them in regions made survival games in large complex modpacks prohibitive, and required pregeneration for playing. This stopped players being able to just spontaneously jump in and play a survival or multiplayer game without significant preparation.
This proof of concept was developed aiming to reduce the time spent generating trees through a variety of techniques, but the methods we have settled on right now primarily focus on relatively tried and true methods from computer science: determining properties at load/compile time, pre-loading to minimise calls to disk, clever efficient caching, implementing more efficient equivalent operations where they exist and general optimisations of that ilk. But we've done them strategically and a lot.
Relationship to Tan's Huge Trees
This is an unofficial and experimental performance fork, not a replacement or competitor to Tan's. All credit for the original mod, tree designs, and artwork belongs to TannyJung.
- You must have regular Tan's Huge Trees installed (but disabled) to use this mod. This ensures Tan receives proper download credit for his work.
- The two mods cannot run simultaneously - this fork replaces the original's functionality
Who should use this?
- TannyJung
- Player's of the Au Naturel Modpack and other testers
- Developers looking to help out Tan with further improvements on Tan's Huge Trees
If or when Tan merges requisite changes into the mainline of his mod, this project will likely be archived.
