About

Description

Minecraft assumes you keep your left hand on the keyboard and your right hand on the mouse. If you play the other way round, every default binding is in the wrong place — and moving WASD by hand still leaves your inventory, drop, chat and hotbar stranded on the far side of the keyboard.

Left Handed moves all of them at once.

The default layout

Movement sits in a cross under your right hand:

 [O]  [K]  [L]  [;]

Everything else is placed by finger, not by position on the grid — each key sits under the same finger that would press it with the left hand in vanilla:

  • Jump — Space
  • Sneak — Right Shift
  • Sprint — Right Ctrl
  • Swap offhand — J (like F, the index finger's home key — both have the raised bump)
  • Inventory — I
  • Drop item — P
  • Chat — U
  • Player list — Enter
  • Advancements — M
  • Social interactions — N
  • Hotbar 1-9 — numeric keypad

Advancements and Social interactions normally live on L and P, exactly where this layout puts back and drop item, so the mod relocates them instead of leaving you with two conflicts.

Other layouts

  • ijkl — the classic I/J/K/L cross, hand in the standard touch-typing position
  • arrows — arrow keys plus the Insert/Delete/End block and the keypad
  • vanilla — restores Minecraft's own defaults

Mouse buttons, your choice

Left-handers are not one group: some use the mouse exactly the way a right-hander does, others are mirrored there too. Options > Controls has an Attack With Right Button switch, off by default, that takes effect immediately.

With the mouse in your left hand your index finger lands on the right button, so turning it on puts breaking under your index finger, as it is for a right-hander.

The reset button follows the layout

In Key Binds, both a single binding's Reset and Reset All restore the left-handed layout, not WASD. Bindings the layout does not manage — screenshot, fullscreen, other mods' keys — still reset to their own defaults.

A second Escape key

Escape is needed constantly but sits at the top left, out of reach. The key immediately left of Backspace (= on a US keyboard) also works as Escape. Backspace keeps deleting, Escape keeps working, and while you are typing in chat, on a sign or in a book the translation is suspended so you can still type that character.

Configuration

Everything is in config/lefthanded-client.toml, re-read live — save it and the layout applies without restarting. Or use /lefthanded in game:

  • /lefthanded status — show the active layout and the main keys
  • /lefthanded layout <okl|ijkl|arrows|vanilla> — switch layout
  • /lefthanded vanilla — restore Minecraft's original bindings
  • /lefthanded numpad <true|false> — hotbar on the keypad
  • /lefthanded swapmouse <true|false> — attack on the right button
  • /lefthanded esc <true|false> — the extra Escape key

Good to know

  • Client-side only. It is not required by servers and works on any of them.
  • Your bindings are safe. The mod writes real Minecraft key bindings into   options.txt, so they stay visible and editable in the Controls screen and keep   working even if you uninstall the mod. It only rewrites them when you change its   configuration, never on top of edits you made by hand.
  • Keyboard layouts. Minecraft stores bindings by physical position, not by the   printed letter. The key this page calls ; is Ò on an Italian keyboard, and the   game will label it that way.
  • Known limit. The mouse swap applies in the world only. Inventory and chest   screens use hard-coded button numbers, so there the left button still takes the   whole stack.
