Description
Loot Sleuth
Ever opened a chest in a modpack, found something completely unexpected, and wondered which damn mod put it there?
Yeah, me too. That's why Loot Sleuth exists.
Loot Sleuth is a utility for Minecraft modpack creators who want to figure out where container loot is coming from, what's being added to it, and which mods might be responsible.
Here's how it works:
Find an unopened chest, look at it, and type /lootsleuth. You'll see which loot table is waiting to generate its contents.
Want to dig deeper? Use /lootsleuth trace, then open the chest normally. Loot Sleuth watches the loot generate and reports what actually ended up inside, including any global loot modifiers it caught adding or changing items.
No rerolling the chest. No messing with the loot. Just watching what happens.
The chat output keeps things simple, but if you want to get nerdy, hover over an item to see exact IDs, resource-pack evidence, and attribution details.
And because sometimes you need more than a chat message, Loot Sleuth saves readable TXT reports and compact JSON files in your world's lootsleuth folder. There's even a full diagnostic mode for when you're really determined to figure out what the hell is going on.
Commands
/lootsleuth— Check the pending loot table of the container you're looking at./lootsleuth trace— Watch what happens when the loot generates./lootsleuth trace full— Capture additional diagnostic details./lootsleuth trace status— Check whether tracing is active./lootsleuth trace stop— Stop tracing./lootsleuth trace last— Review the most recent trace./lootsleuth trace items— Review the traced items.
A few things worth knowing
Loot Sleuth isn't magic. Well, not that kind of magic.
It can observe global loot modifiers and identify which mods own particular items, but those aren't necessarily the same thing. An item belonging to one mod doesn't mean that mod put it in the chest.
Likewise, when Loot Sleuth says something is base loot, that just means it was already there before the observed global loot modifiers ran. It doesn't automatically mean vanilla Minecraft added it.
And obviously, you can't investigate loot generation that's already happened. You'll need an unopened, supported container for tracing.
Requirements
Minecraft 1.21.1 | NeoForge 21.1.172+ | Java 21
Drop the JAR into your mods folder, enable cheats or operator permissions, and you're ready to investigate.
Loot Sleuth works in singleplayer through Minecraft's integrated server. It's a server-side utility, but dedicated-server multiplayer testing hasn't been completed for this release.

Bottom line: If you're building a modpack and can't figure out why a chest contains seventeen different kinds of garbage from twelve different mods, Loot Sleuth might just save you a few hours of digging through loot tables.
Or at least tell you where to start digging.
