Fire is something you earn. Start with a hole in the ground and work your way up a ladder of real kilns, each with its own limits, until you can melt netherite. Mazu’s Kilns stretches the path from your first cooked brick to your first netherite ingot across the whole game.

Pit Kiln
The oldest kiln there is: a pit dug in the ground and lined with packed earth, where a smouldering fire of twigs and straw chars wood and fires the first bricks and pottery.
Clay Kiln
A brick dome with a chimney. The draft feeds the fire and the thick walls hold the heat, enough to fire stone, glass and glazed ceramics. Fired too hot, the clay starts to crack.
Bloomery
A stone and clay stack where ore and charcoal burn together.
Iron Furnace
An iron-clad furnace with bellows forcing air into the fire. More air means more heat and faster smelting, and a refractory lining lets it run hotter still.
Nether Forge
Obsidian walls around a fire fed with what burns in the Nether. The only forge hot enough to fuse ancient scrap with gold into netherite.

Heat & Fuel

Every kiln operates in a temperature range. It heats up while the fuel burns and cools down when the fire goes out. Each recipe needs a minimum temperature, and the hotter the kiln, the faster it works (up to twice as fast). Each fuel has its own ceiling:

Fuel Reaches Safe in
Sticks, leaves, straw, grass 700 °C Pit Kiln, Clay Kiln
Logs and planks 950 °C Clay Kiln, Bloomery, Iron Furnace
Charcoal 1100 °C Clay Kiln, Bloomery, Iron Furnace
Coal 1200 °C Clay Kiln, Bloomery, Iron Furnace
Magma block 1300 °C Lined kilns
Lava bucket 1600 °C Lined kilns, Nether Forge
Blaze rod 1800 °C Lined kilns, Nether Forge

Feed a Clay Kiln something hotter than it can take and it cracks. Leave it like that and it crumbles to pieces. A water bucket puts the fire out in time, and an Obsidian Lining lets it handle up to 1800 °C for good.

  • The vanilla furnace can't be crafted, and the furnaces already in the world stop working.
  • Furnaces in villages and other structures are replaced by Clay Kilns.
  • The smoker is made from a Clay Kiln. The blast furnace and the furnace minecart are gone.
  • Netherite ingots are made in the Nether Forge instead of the crafting table.

Everything above can be turned off in the config if you just want the kilns.

Learn As You Play

No wiki needed. Every kiln has a Recipes tab that lists what it can make, what temperature it needs and which fuel it takes. Click a recipe to load the ingredients, or shift-click to fill a whole stack. A Heating tab shows the current temperature, how hot each fuel gets and how worn the kiln is.

The pace is slow on purpose, but you’re never left guessing: the next kiln always shows up in your recipe book once you have what it takes to build it.

A tree of 20 advancements guides you from your first pit to netherite, with a few secret ones along the way.

Byproducts

Smelting iron with coal leaves Sulfur Slag. Roast it into Sulfur Powder and use it as a weak fertilizer, turn it into gunpowder or mix it with bone meal into a strong Fertilizer.

Temperatures can be shown in °C or °F.
Mazu's Kilns is the first mod of the Mazu's series.
