Description
Better Nautilus extends the vanilla nautilus in a "vanilla+" or "vanilla tweaks" way.
NOW SUPPORTS FABRIC, FORGE, and NEOFORGE without any depndencies. Just make sure to download the right version.
IE: all existing taming, riding, and breeding still works exactly as normal. The mod adds three things:
Trait Breeding
Nautiluses now spawn with randomized stats: health, speed, dash distance, and attack damage, all varying between individuals. Dash damage when a player is riding the Nautilus is also included along with the stat. Breeding works like it does for horses: offspring stats are derived from both parents plus a random factor, so selective breeding gradually produces stronger nautiluses over many generations. The bounds of the system are configurable in the config file. The mod also includes an integrated HUD to see these traits without dependencies or additions. As of 1.3, the mod also adds a configurable variance value in its config file to allow users to make breeding easier/more difficult when it comes to obtaining higher stat- nautileses.
Nautilus Enchantments: entirely toggleable on/off in the config
Three new enchantments designed around how we actually used the nautilus in testing:
Nautilus Protection — reduces damage taken by your mount (reduces the risk of your highly bred/armored nautilus dying to drowning or to random damage)
Nautilus Power — increases dash attack damage (Makes farming for the enchantments faster as you go and makes them a more viable strategy for interesting water pvp)
Nautilus Swiftness — boosts swim speed while riding (This allows for a further feeling of powering up as you use them more, and makes them a legitimate alternative for transportation in certain scenarios even in advanced lategame)
The books have a small chance of dropping whenever a mob is killed by a nautilus. I implemented this so I'd have a fun farm to design, but it worked out to be a really well-rounded mechanic. It gave my friends and I a reason to use the nautilus and make a really strong one via the concurrent breeding mechanic.
Craftable Nautilus Armor: entirely toggleable on/off in the config
All four craftable tiers (Copper through Diamond) can now be made at a crafting table using 8 ingots and a nautilus shell. There are other mods and datapacks for this but this saves you one file every update. Finding diamond ones for my group of friends took well over ten hours before, so I implemented it for this reason.
Server-side compatible. Clients without the mod installed still retain gameplay features; the stat tooltip/hud visibility requires the mod on both sides. You can contact me by visiting conduitsoftware.org to notify me via the bug report tool if I haven't seen your issue report or comment on here.
