Description

Not Today: Rewind

Take a fatal hit, and time winds back 15 seconds instead. You slide back along the path you walked, everything you did since is undone, and you get one more try. Three charges, a cinematic tape-rewind effect, and no way to duplicate items.

What happens when you would die
• No death screen. The screen turns sepia like a tape on rewind: scan lines, ◀◀ and a counter running back to -15 s.
• You slide backwards along the path you actually walked, and land where you stood 15 seconds ago.
• You land in a fair spot: at least 40% health, full air, no fire, no fall damage, and none of the poison, wither or other bad effects you caught since. Good effects stay.
• Time shockwave: hostile mobs nearby are pushed away and slowed for a moment, and mobs that were hunting you forget about you.
• 3 seconds of time shield: no damage while you get your bearings.
• Death echo: a column of soul flames marks the spot where you died for 10 seconds, so you can see what got you.

Everything you did is undone
Not just you, your doings rewind too:
• Blocks you placed disappear, blocks you broke come back. That includes the water you poured, the fire you lit, the sand you dropped and the TNT you primed.
• Chests, furnaces, hoppers, item frames, armor stands and carts you used hold exactly what they held. Took diamonds from a chest? They are back in the chest, ready to take again.
• Your inventory, ender chest and experience are as they were. What you used up comes back, what you gained goes.
• Items you picked up lie on the ground again, where they were.
• What your actions dropped or created vanishes: dropped items, placed boats and minecarts, arrows, lit TNT.

Explosions and fire are repaired
Blocks that explosions or fire destroyed near your path come back during the rewind, the crater filling from the rim inwards.

Charges
• 3 charges, one refills every 5 minutes.
• Right of the hotbar, each ready charge is a glowing hourglass, and a stopwatch fills up while the next one comes back. Spent charges simply disappear.
• When a charge refills, a new hourglass pops in. When you use one, it shakes and fades away.
• Without charges, a death is a real death.

Never stuck, never looping
• Every rewind costs a charge, so a chain of rewinds always ends.
• The landing spot is checked against the world as it is now: free space, solid ground or water, no lava, fire, cactus or magma. If 15 seconds ago is unsafe (you were already falling into the void, for example), older moments are tried, then newer ones. If no moment is safe, you die normally and get the charge back.
• The rewind animation has a hard time limit, and nothing about a rewind is saved to your player. A crash or disconnect in the middle of a rewind leaves you alive and free.
• /kill always kills. A totem of undying in your hand is used before a rewind charge.

No item duplication
Undoing is all or nothing. If undoing could duplicate anything, nothing is undone and only you go back in time:
• An item your actions dropped was taken by another player or a hopper.
• Another player used the same chest, frame or block you did.
A crater is only repaired while all of its drops are still on the ground or in your own inventory (they are removed when the blocks return).
Not undone: mobs you killed stay dead, and villager trades stay made.

Advancements
A new advancement tab with four advancements:
• Not Today: rewind time instead of dying.
• Close Call: rewind out of a fall into the void.
• Time Loop: rewind 3 times within a minute.
• Chronology Repair: undo 50 or more blocks of explosion or fire damage in one rewind.
There is also a new statistic: Times Rewound.

Commands
• /rewind status: your charges and when the next one is ready.
• /rewind charges <players> <amount>: set charges (operators).
• /rewind reload: reload the config (operators).

Config
The config file is config/nottoday_rewind.json. Defaults:
• rewindSeconds = 15: how far back a rewind goes.
• maxCharges = 3, startCharges = 3: charges a player can hold and starts with.
• rechargeSeconds = 300: time for one charge to refill.
• rewindPlayerActions = true: undo the player's blocks, containers, inventory and experience.
• restoreExplosions = true, restoreFire = true: repair explosion and fire damage near the path.
• restoreRadius = 24: how close to your path damage is repaired.
• graceTicks = 60: time shield after landing (20 ticks = 1 second).
• restoreHealthMinFraction = 0.4: minimum health after a rewind (40%).
• shockwaveRadius = 8, aggroResetRadius = 48: shockwave reach, and how far away mobs forget you.
• deathEchoSeconds = 10: how long the death echo stays.
• totemFirst = true: a totem in hand saves you before a charge is used.
• allowInHardcore = true, allowInCreative = false: where rewinds work.
• ignoredDamageTypes = minecraft:generic_kill: damage that always kills (like /kill).
Bad values are corrected and written back to the file.
