Description
What is this mod?
This is a client-side Fabric mod that allows players to select their pronouns, as well as see the pronouns of other players using the mod.
Client-side?
That's right, this mod is purely client-side. The motivation for this was primarily so that it can be used on any server, regardless of what mods are installed. As long as you install the mod locally, you can use it anywhere(*).
How does it work?
Upon joining a server, your client will automatically send a registration message in global chat. For example, if your pronouns are they/them, the following will be sent:
<ori_sky> #pronouns they/them
Registration messages will be hidden from those using the mod, in order to streamline your experience with the mod. For someone who is not using the mod, they will see this message, but it's designed to be human-readable so that they know your pronouns.
Upon receiving a registration message, another player using the pronouns mod will automatically respond with a private registration message to the joining player. For example, if that player's pronouns are she/her, the following will be sent to the joining player:
<c00Lkid1337> /tell ori_sky #pronouns she/her
Similarly, private registration messages will be hidden from those using the mod.
(*) Note: This mod may not function properly on servers that modify the normal operation of chat, e.g. very large servers with instanced chat channels.
Where do I see someone's pronouns?
As of version 0.1.0, pronouns are visible in two places.
- Viewing the player list (holding Tab by default) will display pronouns alongside usernames.
- Hovering over a username in chat events. This should work across many common chat events but the list is not exhaustive.
Where are my pronouns?
Unfortunately, the list of pronouns can never be exhaustive. I've included the most common set of pronouns for you to choose from, but you can set custom ones by editing the config file manually. In a future update I'll provide a way for this to be done entirely from the pronouns options screen. If you're still unsatisfied and feel your pronouns should be included in the default list, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
I don't want my pronouns to be displayed
When using this mod, you can select (none) as your pronouns. Registration will still occur as normal, but no pronouns will be displayed with your name, both on your own client and other players' clients.
Why do I need to see pronouns??
You don't. However, it can help to avoid misunderstandings and mistakes. Sometimes, you misjudge someone's gender -- we all do it: "thanks man", "nah he just joined the server", etc -- and visible pronouns can help prevent this.
Visible pronouns can also alleviate the concerns of some people who may find it difficult to remember everyone's pronouns. For those people, this gives them a way of instantly seeing someone's pronouns without needing to recall them, and hovering over someone's name in chat is a very small price to pay, in return for making someone feel happy and respected.
I still don't want this >:(
Well, don't use it then. You don't have to. This is entirely client-side, so it's your choice. This mod exists for those who do want to use it, so it's probably not designed for you.
