Description
Pocket Butler
Small quality-of-life tweaks that keep your inventory tidy and your hands full. No new items, no new blocks: just less time spent in menus.
✨ Features
🖱️ Middle-click sorting
Middle-click a slot in any inventory screen:
- on your inventory → sorts your main inventory (your hotbar is left alone);
- on a chest, barrel, shulker box, dispenser or hopper → sorts that container.
Identical stacks are merged first, then everything is ordered by item type. A small sort button is also added to chest screens. In creative mode, middle-clicking an item still picks it like in vanilla.
📦 Quick deposit
- Open chest: click the arrow button (top right) or press G to move every item the chest already contains from your inventory into it.
- Nearby chests: press G outside of inventories to do the same with every chest, barrel and shulker box within 8 blocks. Particles show which containers got filled.
Your hotbar is never emptied and unopened loot chests are ignored.
🔁 Auto-refill
When something in your hands runs out, an identical item from your inventory takes its place:
- ⛏️ Broken tools, weapons and shields: your second iron pickaxe jumps into your hand.
- 🧱 Last block placed: the next stack of the same block is moved to your hand.
- 🍎 Last food eaten.
- 🏹 Arrows held in your hand, emptied by a bow or crossbow (tipped arrows are only replaced by the same effect).
- 🎆 Firework rockets while flying with an elytra.
- 🛡️ Broken armor: an identical piece, or the best armor you carry for that slot (never one with Curse of Binding).
- 💀 Totem of Undying: off by default because many PvP servers consider it cheating; enable it in the config.
🧩 Mod compatibility
- Rebindable keys: sort, quick deposit and nearby deposit are in Options → Controls → Pocket Butler. Change them if another mod already uses middle-click or G.
- Modded chests are detected automatically when they only contain plain storage slots. Others can be added with
extraSortableMenus, and troublesome ones blocked withblacklistedMenus(modid:menuor a whole mod withmodid:*). - Safe sorting: if a container has special slots (filters, locked slots, different stack sizes), sorting is cancelled and nothing moves.
- Nearby deposit targets come from the block tag
pocketbutler:deposit_targets(all#c:chests,#c:barrelsand shulker boxes by default), so modpacks can add their own storage with a datapack. It uses NeoForge's standard item handler, so modded storage works too. - Modded items are refilled like vanilla ones;
refillBlacklistexcludes items or whole mods.
⚙️ Configuration
Every feature can be toggled. The config is a server config (one per world), synced to players when they join: on a server, the admin decides. In singleplayer, open it from the Config button in the mod list.
❓ FAQ
Does it need to be on the server? Yes, all the logic runs on the server. Auto-refill works on the server side; sorting and quick deposit also need the mod on the client. A client with the mod can still join a server without it (sorting is simply disabled).
Does it work with claim/protection mods?
Nearby deposit respects spawn protection but cannot see claims from mods such as FTB Chunks or Open Parties and Claims. On such servers, admins can disable enableNearbyDeposit.
Fabric / other versions? For now, only NeoForge 1.21.1.
