Description
Presence Not Position
Presence Not Position is a NeoForge 1.21.1 framework for making places in Minecraft feel like actual locations.
It detects when players enter structures, biomes, dimensions, and their home, then gives clients the information needed to present those locations through titles, artwork, sounds, and adaptive music.
Out of the box, it works without any custom assets. Entering a registered location can display a clean, readable name automatically. Modpack authors can then layer their own presentation on top through resource packs or KubeJS.
For Players
Presence Not Position can make exploration feel much more intentional without changing how the world itself generates.
Depending on the pack, entering a new area can trigger:
- Structure, biome, dimension, and home entrance titles
- Custom subtitles and entrance sounds
- Static or animated title artwork
- Location-specific background music
- Separate day and night music
- Smooth music transitions between locations
- Music that resumes when returning to a previous area
- Automatic priority handling when locations overlap
- A personal Home context around your current respawn bed
Location music automatically gives way to jukeboxes, boss music, and other priority music instead of fighting over the soundtrack.
Players can independently configure which titles and music categories they want enabled, along with how often location titles may repeat.
For Modpack Authors
Presence Not Position is designed to act as a reusable location-presentation layer rather than requiring compatibility code for every individual structure or biome mod.
Any registry-backed structure, biome, or dimension can receive its own presentation through a resource pack.
You can define:
- Custom location names and subtitles
- Localized text
- Static title graphics
- Animated spritesheets or frame animations
- Entrance sound pools
- Structure-specific music
- Biome-specific music
- Dimension-specific music
- Home music
- Day/night soundtrack variants
- Shuffle, random, or sequential playlists
- Track delays and crossfades
- Volume normalization
- Presentation priorities
- Intentional silence for locations where lower-priority music should stop
Multiple resource namespaces and music folders can be combined, making it practical to split presentation content across a modpack and its supporting resource packs.
Presence Not Position also handles overlapping location contexts. Music follows the priority:
Home → Structure → Biome → Dimension
If a higher-priority location has no usable music, the lower-priority soundtrack can continue instead of being unnecessarily interrupted.
KubeJS Support
KubeJS is completely optional.
When installed, server scripts can react to players entering or leaving:
- Structures
- Biomes
- Dimensions
- Home
- Any supported location context
Scripts can also change titles, subtitles, sounds, duration, and priority, suppress automatic presentation, or trigger entirely custom presentations.
This makes Presence Not Position useful for quests, scripted encounters, progression systems, warnings, discoveries, horror effects, achievements, and other pack-specific behavior without requiring another custom mod.
Resource-Pack Friendly
Presentation content lives entirely in normal Minecraft resource packs.
That means packs can add or replace Presence Not Position presentation without modifying the mod itself, and normal resource-pack precedence applies.
Custom assets are optional. If no presentation exists for a location, Presence Not Position can fall back to a readable name generated from its registry ID.
The mod does not require you to ship a custom soundtrack.
Home Detection
Players can have a location context based on their current respawn bed.
When they enter the configurable area around that bed, packs can provide a dedicated Home title, entrance sound, and soundtrack.
Home follows the individual player rather than representing a fixed server-wide location.
Instanced Not Infinite Integration
When Instanced Not Infinite is installed, Presence Not Position recognizes its temporary instance dimensions and avoids showing redundant automatic dimension-entry titles for them.
Structure and biome detection, music, scripting events, and explicitly requested presentations continue to work normally.
Instanced Not Infinite is optional.
