Description
Return by Death is a global and hardcore mod for Minecraft Forge, inspired by the anime Re:Zero. The mod completely overhauls the concept of death in the game by adding unique time manipulation mechanics, psychological pressure, and random divine abilities.
If you are tired of the standard death mechanic with item loss and want to turn your survival into a time loop full of danger and mighty gifts — this mod is for you!
Main Mechanic: The Time Loop
Instead of classic respawning, the mod introduces a Checkpoint (Save Point) system. One of the players on the server (or you in single-player) becomes "Subaru" — the anchor of the time loop. When the anchor dies, the entire world rolls back in time to the last checkpoint:
- All destroyed or placed blocks return to their original places.
- The inventory, health, and experience of all players are reset to their state at the exact moment of the save.
- Slain mobs are resurrected, and items dropped on the ground are returned.
Checkpoints are created automatically (configured by time or randomized) or via a command.
Psychological Pressure: Sanity and the Witch's Scent
Death leaves a mark. The anchor player, who experiences the time rollbacks, gradually loses their Sanity.
- The Witch's Scent: The more you die, the stronger you smell of the Witch's Miasma. Monsters will start to smell you from afar, ignore other players, and become more aggressive.
- Hallucinations: At low Sanity, you will begin to see creepy phantoms, hear distorted sounds, and lose spatial orientation.
- The Unseen Hand: The Subaru player can manifest the Unseen Hand right from the start to grab mobs or players from a distance and crush them (keys Z and X). The higher your Miasma level, the more devastating the damage!
Divine Protections
Upon joining the world for the first time, every player randomly receives a Divine Protection — a powerful permanent gift.
Controls and Commands
- Z, X — Keys for using active Divine Protections and Unseen Hand strikes (can be reassigned in settings).
- V — Key to open the Divine Protections Menu to select active abilities for Z and X keys (can be reassigned in settings).
All mod commands are available to administrators via the /rbd prefix:
/rbd setcheckpoint— Forcefully create a save point./rbd setsubaruplayer <player>— Transfer the "curse" (the Subaru role) to another player without creating a new checkpoint./rbd triggerRBD— Manually trigger an immediate time rollback to the last save point./rbd status— Check the current status of the time loop./rbd scent [get|set|add] <player> [amount]— Find out or change the level of a player's Witch's Scent./rbd protection [grant|revoke] <player> <name>— Grant or take away a Divine Protection (useRANDOMfor a random one).
Gamerules
The mod features highly flexible configuration via standard /gamerule commands:
autoCheckpointEnabled(true/false) — Periodic automatic creation of checkpoints (default: true).checkpointFixedInterval(number) — Fixed interval (in seconds) between checkpoints (default: 600).useRandomCheckpointInterval(true/false) — Use a randomized interval instead of a fixed one (default: true).randomCheckpointLowerBound/randomCheckpointUpperBound(number) — Min/Max time for the random interval (300/1000).
returnbydeathDeathMode (1, 2, 3) — Harshness of the time loop in multiplayer (default: 3):
-
-
World rollback occurs upon the death of any player on the server.
-
Rollback occurs only upon the death of Subaru. Others respawn like in vanilla.
-
(Hardcore): Rollback occurs only upon the death of Subaru. Other players permanently transition to Spectator mode upon death.
-
Satella's Resurrection Ritual (Only for mode 3): Subaru can permanently resurrect a dead friend from spectator mode. To do this, you need to hold a Totem of Undying in your hands and write your friend's name in the game chat along with summoning words (for example: "Satella, resurrect Notch" or "bring Notch back to life"). The totem will burn, you will permanently lose 1 heart (maximum health), and your friend will be brought back to life right in front of you in the darkness!
