Description

Haunter in the Dark mod adds one anomalous statue, a blindfold equipment, a readable interactive document, an SCP label, and a rare fortified containment facility to the game. The mod is heavily inspired by SCP-689 from the SCP Foundation Universe.

SCP-689 appears as a small green soapstone statue depicting an unknown seated skeleton-like deity.

Anyone who gazes directly upon SCP-689 under illumination becomes marked in its memory. As long as at least one person keeps an unbroken watch over it, the statue remains completely motionless.

The moment it is left in total darkness or completely unobserved, it vanishes instantly, and reappears upon one of its victims, killing them immediately.

► Where can I find the mod content?

SCP-689, its documentation, its label, and the blindfold can be found inside the SCP-689 Containment Chamber.

The statue sits atop the central pedestal inside the inner containment room, with its official document and warning label positioned at the entrance.

The statue, document, and label are not craftable.

All the mod content is also available in the Haunter in the dark Creative tab.

► Where does the structure spawn?

The containment facility generates at surface level in Overworld biomes and is very rare, designed to be encountered naturally during exploration.

You can locate the nearest facility using:

/locate structure haunter_in_the_dark:cell

► How does the curse work?

Whenever a living creature or player looks directly at SCP-689 in the light, they become marked.

You will hear a chilling heartbeat sound and receive a warning: "You feel a cold gaze piercing your soul..."

Looking through transparent obstacles such as glass, stained glass, glass panes, or iron bars will still mark you

Viewing someone holding the statue, seeing it dropped on the ground, or having it visible in your open inventory / hotbar while in the light will also mark you.

► How do I prevent SCP-689 from attacking?

SCP-689 cannot move or attack as long as at least one conscious creature is looking at it under light.

If it is left completely in the dark or unobserved for just over a second (25 ticks), it immediately vanishes and strikes one of its marked targets.

► What happens when SCP-689 attacks?

The statue vanishes with a burst of darkness and sound, instantly manifesting directly in front of a randomly chosen marked victim.

The victim is struck with blindness and darkness, and suffers immediate and guaranteed death, bypassing standard invulnerability frames.

The statue then remains resting upon the victim's remains, awaiting its next observer.

► How do I safely move or relocate the statue?

To move SCP-689 without dying, you must equip the Blindfold first so you do not look at it.

With empty hands, Shift + Right-click the statue. You will pick it up and carry it with both hands.

While carrying the statue, your movement speed is reduced and your hotbar is locked to it. Right-click on ground to place it down safely.

► How does the Blindfold work and how do I remove it?

Equipping the Blindfold in your helmet slot turns your vision 100% pitch black and hides all HUD so you cannot accidentally see the statue.

To remove the blindfold safely without dropping or seeing the statue, Sneak + Right-Click in the air with an empty hand.

► Can I place and read the SCP document?

Right-click while holding the document to read it.

Shift + Right-click a block to place it down in world space.

Right-click the placed document to open the NEW interactive high-resolution viewer (supports mouse wheel zoom up to 3.5x and dragging!.

Shift + Right-click the placed document to pick it up again.

SCP-689 | Haunter In The Dark

SCP-689 is a sinister green soapstone carving approximately 30 cm tall, depicting an unknown skeleton-like seated figure with hands clasped over its knees.

While observed, it remains completely inert. However, its anomalous properties manifest through visual contact:

  • Looking directly at SCP-689 while under illumination permanently marks you in its memory.
  • Unlike typical mobs, glass, stained glass, glass panes, and iron bars do not protect you from the curse, looking through them still marks you.
  • As long as at least one living observer maintains constant visual contact, SCP-689 cannot move.
  • The moment all observers blink, look away, or plunge the room into darkness, SCP-689 dematerializes within 1.25 seconds.
  • It teleports directly onto one of its previously marked targets, causing instantaneous death, leaving the statue sitting upon the victim's corpse.
  • If bystanders turn to look at the freshly killed victim and the statue, they in turn become marked, perpetuating the deadly cycle. Creative mode players are completely immune to the curse and will be automatically purged from the statue's memory.

The Carrying

Transporting an anomaly that kills whoever stops looking at it requires strict Foundation protocols.

To transport SCP-689:

  • Equip a Blindfold before entering the chamber so you do not see the statue.
  • With an empty hand, Shift + Right-click the statue to lift it into your arms.
  • While carrying the heavy statue, you are inflicted with Slowness II and your active slot is locked.
  • Other people who see you carrying the statue in the light will become marked as well
  • To set it down, Right-click a solid block.

The Blindfold

The Blindfold is an essential containment tool found within the facility or crafted for personnel safety.

Equipping it in your helmet slot causes complete, pitch-black blindness, fully disabling vision and container inspection.

Because you cannot see anything, you cannot be marked by SCP-689 while wearing it.

To prevent accidentally removing your blindfold while handling the statue, it can only be removed by performing Sneak + Right-Click in the air with an empty hand.

SCP-689 Containment Chamber

The SCP-689 Containment Chamber is a heavily fortified underground and surface facility generating rarely across Overworld biomes.

SCP-689 can only be found in the SCP-689 Containment Chamber.
