Weather Preserves mod adds six anomalous jars, six reusable empty jars, one readable document, one label, and one structure with six different variants to the game. The mod is heavily inspired by SCP-853 from the SCP Foundation Universe.

SCP-853 consists of sealed jars containing strange, colored substances. Each jar is labeled with a weather pattern and a year. Opening one releases the weather preserved inside.

A clear blue sky, a summer rain, a furious tornado and more, all contained inside ordinary-looking jars.

But opening more than one before the previous weather has ended may have much more dangerous consequences.

► Where can I find the mod content?

SCP-853 jars, their documentation, and their label can be found inside the SCP-853 Containment Chamber.

Each chamber contains one sealed jar, together with its document and label. There are six possible variants, each containing a different SCP-853 instance.

The jars, document, and label are not craftable.

All the main content is also available in the Weather Preserves Creative tab.

► Where does the structure spawn?

The structure generates at surface level in Overworld biomes and is rare, with approximately one structure every 3,000 blocks.

You can find the nearest chamber using:

/locate structure weatherpreserves:cell

► How do I open a jar?

Place the jar on the ground, then Shift + Right-click it.

Its weather activates immediately, and the sealed jar becomes an empty jar.

Placing, carrying, or right-clicking a jar without sneaking will not release its contents.

► How long does the weather last?

Each weather effect lasts 15 real minutes, equivalent to 18,000 ticks at normal game speed.

The remaining duration is saved with the world, so if you close the world the weather will be saved at that point in time.

► Can I use a second jar to change the weather?

Opening a second jar while another jar’s weather is still active triggers a severe thunderstorm.

This also happens with two jars of the same type, or when different players open jars in the same dimension.

Even a Clear Blue Sky jar will trigger this reaction if another jar’s weather is already active.

► Can I refill an empty jar with weather?

No. Once released, the weather cannot be put back inside.

However, empty jars have another use: storing cookies!

► Do jars work in the Nether and the End?

The weather-opening mechanic does not activate in the Nether or the End.

Use the jars in the Overworld. Other dimensions must have skylight and no dimension ceiling to support activation.

► How can I place the document?

Right-click while holding the document to read it.

Shift + Right-click a block to place it on top, provided there is space.

Right-click the placed document to read it.

Shift + Right-click the placed document to pick it up again.

SCP-853 | Weather Preserves

SCP-853 jars come in different shapes, with colored contents and labels identifying the weather preserved inside.

While sealed, they can be collected, carried, and placed without releasing their contents. Their effects only activate when opened.

Opening a jar changes the weather and atmosphere in the dimension, affecting other players there as well.

Depending on the jar, this can change visibility, colors, particles, and ambient sounds. More dangerous weather can also push creatures, freeze them, or alter the surrounding terrain.

The jars currently available contain:

  • Clear Blue Sky: clears the weather and creates a bright blue atmosphere with much less fog.
  • Gentle Summer Rain: fills the surroundings with rain particles, soft rain sounds, and warm atmospheric colors.
  • Furious Tornado: creates strong winds that pull, spin, and lift nearby entities, while tearing surface blocks into flying debris.
  • Sand-storm: drastically reduces visibility, pushes exposed players, and deposits sand around them.
  • Blinding Dust-storm: A powerful dust storm that drastically reduces visibility and slowly blankets the world in layers of dust.
  • Heavy Blizzard: brings blowing snow, poor visibility, freezing damage, and snow accumulation.

Taking shelter protects against the direct wind of sandstorms, blizzards, and combined storms. During a blizzard, shelter also allows creatures to recover from freezing.

Sneaking reduces the wind’s force during blizzards and combined storms.

The tornado is more dangerous: a roof does not guarantee protection from its movement effects.

Weather jars work in the Overworld. Their opening mechanic does not activate in the Nether or the End.

Opening Multiple Jars

Opening another jar before the previous weather has ended triggers a severe thunderstorm.

This happens with any combination, including identical jars and Clear Blue Sky jars. Different players can also trigger the reaction by opening jars in the same dimension.

The individual weather is replaced by a violent storm featuring:

  • A darkened, desaturated atmosphere.
  • Thick fog and reduced visibility.
  • Heavy rain driven sideways by the wind.
  • Strong gusts that change direction and intensity.
  • Players, mobs, and dropped items being pushed around.
  • Lightweight blocks being lifted as debris.
  • Frequent real lightning strikes.

Leaves, flowers, saplings, carpets, and other lightweight blocks can be carried away by the storm.

Shelter protects against its direct wind, while sneaking helps players resist the gusts.

Opening additional jars keeps the storm active, refreshing its duration from the latest opening.

Even the most harmless-looking jar can become dangerous when combined with another.

Empty Jars & Cookies

Once its weather has been released, each jar remains as an empty container.

These jars can be kept as decorations or used as cookie jars.

Right-click a jar while holding a Minecraft cookie in your main hand to add one. Right-click with an empty hand to retrieve one.

Cookies are visibly displayed inside the container, and different jar shapes can hold different amounts.

Breaking a filled jar drops its stored cookies separately. Their contents are also saved when the world is closed.

SCP-853 Containment Chamber

The SCP-853 Containment Chamber is a rare structure with several equally likely variants.

Each contains a sealed weather jar, a readable document, and an SCP label.

A single chamber does not contain the entire collection. Finding different weather preserves requires locating additional chambers.

The documents are readable, while the label provides information about the SCP’s classification and risk level.

Stopping the Weather

Weather effects end automatically when their duration expires.

Players with command permission can also stop them immediately using:

/weather clear

However, ending the weather does not repair tornado damage, remove deposited sand or snow, or undo the consequences of lightning strikes.

The mobGriefing gamerule controls debris lifting during combined storms and additional snow placement during blizzards. It does not prevent the individual tornado from lifting blocks or sandstorms from depositing sand.
