Description

Skillsmith (Beta)

Level up by playing. Every action counts.

Skillsmith adds nine professions to Minecraft, each with its own XP and levels from 0 to 50. Mine, chop, farm, fish, hunt, cook, smith, enchant and build as usual: your actions earn profession XP, and every level unlocks passive perks that reward your playstyle. Vanilla XP and levels are not touched.

⚠️ Beta notice: This is an early, private beta. XP values and perk numbers are a first balance pass and will change. Please report bugs and balance feedback, and attach your logs (see below).

Professions

  • ⛏️ Mining – stone, deepslate and ores
  • 🪓 Woodcutting – all kinds of logs
  • 🌾 Farming – mature crops, sugar cane, melons, pumpkins
  • 🎣 Fishing – fish, treasure and even junk
  • 🏹 Hunting – configured mobs, with diminishing returns on repeat kills
  • 🍖 Cooking – furnace, smoker and campfire
  • 🔨 Smithing – crafting, anvil repairs and the Smithing Table
  • ✨ Enchanting – XP per experience level spent
  • 🧱 Building – every placed block

Smithing is just one of nine professions. Skillsmith is about all of them.

Perks (at level 50)

  • Mining: up to +15% block speed, +15% extra ore-drop chance
  • Woodcutting: up to +15% block speed, +10% extra-log chance
  • Farming: up to +15% extra-crop chance
  • Fishing: up to +15% extra-catch chance, +15% extra treasure rolls in open water
  • Hunting: +10% attack damage, +20% chance to duplicate one mob drop
  • Cooking: +10% extra furnace/smoker output chance, +10% saturation from food
  • Smithing: lower anvil break chance, chance to waive anvil XP-level costs
  • Enchanting: +20% chance to save one XP level
  • Building: +15% profession XP, +12% chance to get a placed block back

Perks unlock step by step as you level. You get a chat message and a sound for each level-up and each new perk.

Features

  • Profession overview screen – open it with /skillsmith or /sb. See levels, XP progress, active perk totals and the next milestone.
  • Server-authoritative – works on dedicated servers and in singleplayer. Progress is saved per player and survives death.
  • Anti-farming built in
    • Blocks placed by players, fluids, portals or pistons don't give XP when broken again.
    • Repeated mob kills give diminishing XP, and spawner/breeding/spawn-egg mobs can be excluded.
    • Mass-crafting in Smithing and mass-placing in Building give diminishing XP too.
  • Fully datapack-driven – all XP rules (blocks, mobs, items/actions) are JSON files in your datapacks. Server owners and pack makers can add or change rules without touching the mod.
  • Mod-friendly – rules can match tags and whole namespaces. Farmer's Delight crops and Alex's Mobs are included by default, no hard dependencies.
  • Test logging – detailed audit logs show why XP was or wasn't given (see below).

Beta Testing & Bug Reports

Skillsmith writes its own logs to <game folder>/logs/skillsmith/:

  • skillsmith-xp.log – every XP grant and every denied grant with its reason (player-placed block, creative mode, spawner mob, max level, …)
  • skillsmith-events.log – level-ups, perk procs, rule reloads, admin commands and errors

Please attach both files (and latest.log) to your bug report.

Things I'd especially like feedback on:

  • Is the XP progression too fast or too slow?
  • Do the perk values feel noticeable but not overpowered?
  • Is XP given or denied where you wouldn't expect it?
  • Compatibility with other mods

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.6
  • NeoForge 20.6.139 (or a compatible 20.6.x)
  • Java 21

Required on both client and server.

Known Limitations

  • Farming growth-speed and auto-replant perks are not functional yet.
  • Smithing Table XP is detected conservatively; results dropped because of a full inventory don't count.
  • Blocks transformed by other mods without standard NeoForge events can't be tracked for anti-farming.
  • Not yet tested on a dedicated server or in large modpacks.
