Description

General
Snitches is a mod that adds a few sound and visual based alarms, that
can make your expirience way harder. Its mostly for hardcore purposes
but can be used, to make your game more immersive and fun.
Nothing it adds will ever attack you. Everything it adds will tell on you.
Crows
Flocks sit around the world until something disturbs them. Get too close,
too fast, and the whole flock breaks in one direction at once, screaming.
That scream carries 256 blocks and gets duller and more muffled with
distance, and the birds stay visible out to 160 blocks, so a flock going
up is something other players and you can read from far away. They never
settle in the same spot again.
Crows cannot be hurt. Hitting one does not kill it, it only puts the
whole flock in the air, which is the loudest possible outcome. How close
you get depends entirely on how loudly you move.
Movement They take off from
Sprinting 8 blocks
Walking 5 blocks
Crouch walking 2.5 blocks
Standing still 2 blocks
Loose Bricks
Small stacks you can pick apart one brick at a time. A thrown brick is
heavy and does not fly far, but where it lands it shatters loudly, puts
nearby crows up and pulls hostile mobs over to investigate. A direct hit
also hurts, for three hearts, though the noise is still the point. Use it
to move attention somewhere you are not.
Branches
Dead branches lie under trees. They have no collision, so you walk into
one without ever seeing it, and that is the point. Stepping on one snaps
it instantly, puts every crow within 30 blocks in the air and draws mobs
toward the crack. Branches take the wood texture of the tree they spawned
under, resolved while the game is running, so modded trees and resource
packs work with no patches.
Configuration
Almost every number above can be changed, each with an explanation next
to it: the take off distance for every movement speed, flock size and how
tightly a flock holds its escape heading, how often crows call and how
likely they are to stay silent, how far and how heavily a brick throws,
how far bricks and branches spook crows and attract mobs, and whether
crows spawn naturally at all.
Compatibility
Requires Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and GeckoLib. Nothing else. Install it
on both the server and the client. Free to use in modpacks.
Attract to Sound
Optional, and detected automatically. With it installed the two mods feed
each other: crows react to loud events that mod already tracks, such as
gunfire and explosions, and bricks and branches register their noise with
it so its mob AI can act on them as well.
Quiet continuous sounds like footsteps are deliberately ignored. Without
that filter crows would bolt every time somebody walked past far away and
the distance rules above would never matter.
Without it nothing is lost. Bricks and branches still pull hostile mobs
over using the mod's own noise handling.
Modded trees and resource packs
Branches read the texture of whatever log they spawned under at render
time, so any modded wood is handled without a compatibility patch and
resource packs are picked up on their own.
A note on render distance
Minecraft never sends you entities further away than your view distance,
so for the full 160 blocks you need a render distance of at least 11
chunks, and on a server the server's view distance has to allow it too.
Sound is unaffected and works at any render distance.
