Sophisticated Advanced Crafting

Craft from your backpack and your pockets at the same time — at a world crafting table or inside the backpack itself.

Sophisticated Advanced Crafting adds Advanced Crafting upgrades for Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage on NeoForge 1.21.1. It has nothing to do with Create’s mechanical crafter or any Create crafting machine. It only connects three places you already store items: the Sophisticated backpack or storage the upgrade is installed in, your normal player inventory (including hotbar), and — when you are using a placed crafting table in the world — a worn or carried backpack that has this upgrade.

The core idea is simple. When you pick a recipe, ingredients are pulled from the open backpack or storage inventory and from your player inventory in one step. You do not have to dump the backpack into your hotbar, craft, then shove leftovers back. The same dual-source pull works whether you are crafting from the upgrade tab on the backpack or storage screen itself, or standing at a vanilla workbench in the world with a backpack that has Advanced Crafting installed.

What this changes about day-to-day crafting

Vanilla Minecraft and most backpack mods treat “stuff in the pack” and “stuff on your body” as two separate piles. The stock Sophisticated Crafting Upgrade already lets you craft inside a backpack, but it still leaves you poking a blank 3×3 and shuffling stacks when half the recipe is in the pack and half is in your pockets. That friction shows up constantly: you need torches in a cave, rails for a minecart, scaffolding for a build, or a quick stack of chests while your storage is full of wood and you are holding the tools.

With Advanced Crafting installed, that shuffle mostly goes away. Open the backpack, open the green recipe book on the upgrade tab, click the recipe, and the grid fills from both the backpack contents and your inventory. Leave the cave without unpacking. At base, open a Sophisticated barrel or chest with the storage version of the upgrade and craft from what is in that container plus what you are carrying. Out in the field, walk up to a normal crafting table while wearing the upgraded backpack; the table can reach into that backpack as well as your inventory so you are not forced to empty the pack onto the ground first.

The upgrade embeds Minecraft’s real vanilla green recipe book, not a custom fake list. The book is docked outside the backpack or storage UI so it does not cover the craft grid, your inventory, or the hotbar. It starts closed so sorting stays clean, and you open it when you want recipe clicks. Recipes that use tags (for example any kind of planks) place from whatever matching items you actually have — oak, birch, modded wood — instead of failing because the exact item id was not in one inventory.

How the two upgrades work

One jar soft-depends on Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage. If Backpacks is present you get the backpack Advanced Crafting upgrade (copper base, gold outline). If Storage is present you get the storage Advanced Crafting upgrade (wood base, gold outline). Install either or both mods; only the matching upgrade items appear. Put the upgrade into a backpack or storage upgrade slot the same way you install any other Sophisticated upgrade.

You cannot run the stock Crafting Upgrade and the Advanced Crafting Upgrade in the same backpack or storage container. That is intentional: one crafting brain per container keeps behavior predictable. Remove the stock crafting upgrade, install Advanced, and recipe clicks always mean dual-source pull plus the real recipe book.

Player experience in practice

On a mining trip your backpack holds coal, sticks, iron, and cobble while your hotbar is full of tools and food. Without this mod you open the pack, move ingredients into inventory, craft, move leftovers back, and resume. With Advanced Crafting you open the upgrade tab, toggle the green book, click torches or rails, and keep moving — ingredients come from the pack and your pockets together.

At a base storage wall you keep bulk wood and stone in Sophisticated barrels. With the storage Advanced Crafting upgrade you craft chests, hoppers, and building blocks from the barrel plus whatever odd stacks you are holding, without hauling everything into a crafting room first.

At a world workbench in a starter house or outpost, wearing an Advanced Crafting backpack means the table behaves like an extension of the pack. Field repairs, emergency blocks, and “I forgot to craft X before I left” moments stop requiring a full unpack.
