About

Description

TACTILE makes your movement keys take effect the moment you press them, instead of at the next game tick. Everything else about movement stays vanilla.

About the author: I (fallingsword) set the goals, gave the technical direction, made the design decisions and play-tested every version. The code, tests and documentation were written by Claude, an AI model by Anthropic. The project was checked by testing and measurement, which is published in full on GitHub.

What it does

In vanilla 1.8.9, a key press waits for the next game tick (every 50 ms), and a tap shorter than a tick can be lost entirely. With TACTILE:

  • each press and release of a movement key takes effect at the moment it happened;
  • a jump shows on screen about 2 ms after the press, instead of about 30 ms on average;
  • short taps always count.

What it does not do

It does not make you faster, jump higher or farther, or automate anything. Jump arcs, sprinting, sneaking at edges, landings, water, lava, ladders, slime, knockback and item use follow vanilla's rules. In 34 recorded situations, 28 matched vanilla exactly and the rest differed by 6 mm to 11 cm, all explained in the verification report.

Modes (F7)

  • EXACT (default): keys act at their exact time.
  • STEPPED: keys act in steps of a rate you choose (1–1920 per second).
  • VANILLA: unchanged game.

F8 shows a status overlay. Settings: Mods → TACTILE → Config.

Compatibility

  • Minecraft 1.8.9, Forge. Client-side only.
  • Works with OptiFine.
  • Precise timing needs Windows; other systems read keys once per frame.
  • Servers with strict movement checks, such as Hypixel, rubber-band you with TACTILE on. Switch it off there (F7 to VANILLA), and check each server's rules before using it.

Privacy

TACTILE reads keyboard input at a low level, but only while the game window is in front and no menu or chat is open. It keeps only your movement keys, stores nothing and sends nothing. Details are in the README.
