Description
TravelingMerchantWagon
Pack your supplies, hitch your horses, and hit the road as a traveling merchant.
TravelingMerchantWagon adds modular wooden wagons that you build from individual parts. Carry your storage, tools and companions across the world, then stop for the night with a place to rest on board.
Explore the illustrated Wiki for assembly GIFs, controls, cargo and passenger guides, and version-specific integrations.
Main features
- Build a wagon your way. Choose a standard, extended or wide cargo box, single- or double-horse shafts, and a driver's bench for one, two or three people. Pick a simple wooden bench or a cushioned seat with a backrest, mix wood types, and choose fabric colors.
- Choose a smaller ride. Build a two-seat passenger cart with a folding hood, or a compact six-slot flatbed handcart. Both use a small assembly jack and two large wheels. Fit single-horse or hand-pulling shafts to the passenger cart, and hand-pulling shafts to the flatbed.
- Hitch up and drive. Adult horses, donkeys, mules, camels, skeleton horses and zombie horses can pull your wagon. Accelerate gradually, steer, brake and reverse, or tap the sprint key while moving forward for a higher speed limit. Cargo affects acceleration and the extra speed available; a pair of animals gives stronger acceleration and softens the cargo penalty. Push an unhitched wagon to reposition it or help it out of a difficult spot.
- Pull it yourself. Fit hand-pulling shafts to a freight wagon, passenger cart or flatbed and take the handles. Move and steer with your normal movement keys while looking around freely. The flatbed also supports sprinting, with cargo affecting its pace.
- Take your workshop with you. Load permitted blocks into visible cargo slots. Open supported chests and barrels, and use supported workstations directly on the wagon. Unload cargo with sneak-right-click.
- Bring companions and rest on the road. Add wooden cargo stools for passengers and bedding for sleeping through the night without changing your respawn point. Use wagon straw mats in older editions, or vanilla straw beds in 26.3. Sleeping occupants stay with the wagon as it moves.
- Fit useful extras. Install a storage cabinet beneath the driver's bench. Choose a rollable cargo cover or a canvas canopy with front and rear curtains; both adapt to the size of your freight wagon. The passenger cart's folding hood can be opened or folded back one step at a time.
- Park and rebuild. Use an assembly jack to switch between a parked block structure and a drivable wagon. Parts, cargo and stored contents stay with it during conversion. A carpenter's hammer lets you dismantle the wagon and recover its components.
Getting started
- Place an assembly jack and fit a cargo box to its raised platform.
- Add a driver's bench, shafts, two small front wheels and two large rear wheels.
- Right-click the jack to assemble your wagon.
- Lead your draft animals over and right-click the shafts to hitch them.
- Take the driver's position and use your movement keys to drive: the left seat on a double bench, or the middle seat on a triple.
For the passenger cart or flatbed, use a small assembly jack and two large wheels; the passenger cart already includes its seats. The Wiki shows each assembly step.
On editions with Patchouli support, install it for the Coachman's Handbook, with assembly diagrams, crafting recipes and instructions for cargo, equipment and controls. Players who have not received a handbook get one when joining a world, unless the server disables the gift. It can also be crafted with a book, a lead and any planks.
Optional mod integrations
Availability varies by Minecraft version and loader. See the Wiki's compatibility table for the supported combinations and corresponding Fabric ports.
- Patchouli: An illustrated in-game handbook to guide you through building and using your wagon.
- Traveler's Backpack: Transport backpacks and open their original storage screens on board. Separate sleeping bags can be loaded across two cargo slots and used by players without changing their respawn point.
- Sophisticated Backpacks: Load backpacks and access their storage and settings screens directly on the wagon.
- Carry On: Carry permitted cargo onto and off the wagon, or place a carried passenger on a cargo stool. Interactions follow your Carry On key binding and pickup rules.
- Touhou Little Maid: Wagon Companion and Wagon Passenger tasks let maids find suitable seats. Companions can defend the wagon with bows and crossbows, or TACZ guns on supported targets. Rickshaw Puller lets a maid pull for a seated driver, or follow her owner on foot with a flatbed. Maids can sleep on straw mats during rest time under any task. Photos, soul talismans and cameras follow their original release and capture rules.
- SWEM: Hitch adult, tamed SWEM horses wearing a bridle and Driving Harness. Their gaits follow the vehicle's speed, and reins connect to the driver's hand or the front rivet when parked without a driver. Manage tack through SWEM's normal interactions while hitched. Available on Forge 1.20.1 and NeoForge 1.21.1.
- Sable: Wagon movement and passenger boarding account for Sable's physical structures.
Supported vanilla-style modded chests and barrels can also serve as interactive cargo, including BetterEnd barrels using BCLib on supported older targets. Support depends on how each container stores and exposes its contents.
Requirements and settings
GeckoLib is required. Fabric editions also require Fabric API and Forge Config API Port. The integrations above are optional; install their own prerequisites as usual.
Server owners can adjust cargo rules, driving speeds, cargo-related acceleration, two-animal team benefits and handbook gifts in tm_wagon-server.toml.
