Description

Every ruin was once a building.

Minecraft is full of ruins, but none of them ever fell down. They generate already broken: a heap of rubble that was never a wall. Nothing decayed. It just spawned looking old.

Unruin puts the time back in!

What's in this version?

This first release is a builder's toolIt does one thing, properly.

The Weathering Trowel ages a block one step at a time: pristine, worn, weathered, ruined. Sneak-click to walk it back. Ageing costs durability, restoring is free. Undoing mistake shouldn't punish you.

The part that matters: it works on ordinary blocks. No planning ahead, no building with special mod blocks. Put up a wall of plain stone bricks, run the trowel along it, and it ages in place. Knock a few blocks out and you have ruin in about ninety seconds.

Four materials so far: stone bricks, oak planks, bricks, sandstone, each with four stages of wear.

Pristine blocks look exactly like vanilla, because they reference the vanilla texture instead of replacing it. Nothing you have already built changes appearance until you decide it should.

What's coming

This is the first release of a ModJam 2026 entry. The rest is being built during the jam:

  • The Chronoscope : a lens. Look through it at a worn block and see the pristine form it used to have.
  • The Mason's Kit : repairs blocks properly, consuming real material.
  • Ruins that remember : structures that generate intact, then decay, keeping a record of what they were. Restore one completely and it tells you who built it and what happened.

None of those are in this download. What you get today is the trowel and the blocks. It is small on purpose.

Getting started

Craft the trowel from an iron ingot and stick, or take it from the Unruin creative tab.

  • Right-click a block to age it
  • Sneak + right-click to restore it

It works on stone bricks, oak planks, bricks and sandstone:
plain vanilla ones, or blocks you have already aged.

Notes

The block textures are generated by code, not drawn by hand. Weathering is a stochastic process: fractures propagate from weak points, moss colonises mortar lines, soft stone abrades rather than cracking. And generating that algorithmically is the normal technique for the job. The generator is committed to the repository and readable;
have a look if that sounds interesting. Every screenshot on this page is genuine in-game capture.
