Vanilla Pets

Turn Minecraft’s animals into real pets that eat, sleep, play, use the toilet, learn tricks and live their own lives, all in the vanilla style.

Every vanilla animal can be your pet: 34 kinds, from dogs and cats to cows, frogs, striders, happy ghasts and armadillos. Each one behaves like the real animal. Dogs turn round in their bed before lying down, cats knead and scratch their post, armadillos curl into a ball to sleep. Everything uses vanilla models and textures, so it fits right into the game and works with your resource packs.

🐾 Getting a pet

• Animals you tame the vanilla way (wolf, cat, parrot, horse, llama, camel, nautilus…) become your pets automatically.
• For every other animal, use a Pet Collar.
• Babies of your pets are born yours.
• Your first pet comes with a free Pet Care Guide, an in-game book that explains everything.

❤️ Six needs to look after

Every pet has Hunger, Thirst, Hygiene, Mood, Energy and a Bladder. Pets look after themselves when what they need is nearby. Neglect them and they get sluggish and grumpy.

• Look at a pet to see its needs in a small panel above its head.
• Alert bubbles pop up when a pet needs something urgently.
• Paw markers show your pets from afar, even through walls, and they glow while you hold the whistle.
• Press J to switch between everything, alerts and markers only, and off.

🐶 Pets that act like real animals

• Dogs fetch, play-bow, go for walks on a lead and scratch the ground after doing their business. When they need to go out they wait by the door. They turn round in their bed before lying down, and their paws twitch while they dream.
• Cats use the litter box and scratch litter over it afterwards. They knead their bed, rake the cat tree, lounge on top of it and hate baths.
• Foxes crouch to pounce, fetch and curl up to sleep.
• Parrots roost on a bird perch, chase the feather wand and ride on your shoulder.
• Farm animals graze, drink from ponds, eat from troughs and fold their legs to lie down.
• Every other species has its own habits:
  • turtles pull their head in;
  • frogs flick their tongue into the bowl;
  • bees land and fold their wings;
  • striders warm up in lava;
  • hoglins root in the soil;
  • happy ghasts hover over you;
  • nautiluses swim laps.
• Baby animals have their own poses, and puppies and kittens play-fight.

💛 Loyalty and tricks

Good care slowly earns your pet’s loyalty, shown as hearts. Loyal pets learn tricks:

• Spin (dogs, cats, foxes, parrots)
• Shake Paw (dogs, foxes)
• Roll Over (dogs, cats, foxes)
• Beg (dogs)

🩹 Vet care

A pet left with an empty need for too long can fall ill: slow, sneezing and in no mood to play. Craft a First Aid Kit to make it better. Pets never die of illness, and you can turn illness off in the settings.

🏠 Pet supplies

• Food Bowl and Water Bowl in all 16 dye colours.
• Five kibbles: Pet Kibble, Fish Kibble, Meaty Kibble, Seed Mix and Veggie Kibble. Every pet has a favourite, and the bowl shows what’s in it.
• Pet Bed in all 16 colours.
• Litter Box with Cat Litter in 16 colours. Scoop it with a shovel for a Bag of Pet Waste, which works like bone meal.
• Pee Pad to house-train your dog.
• Cat Tree with a rope-wrapped scratching post, a shelf and a top perch for lounging and naps.
• Bird Perch for parrots.
• Feed Trough and Water Trough for farm animals. Line them up for a long feeding row.

🎾 Toys and care

• Pet Ball: throw it and dogs and foxes bring it back.
• Ball of Yarn: cats and dogs chase it.
• Feather Wand: cats pounce at it and parrots flap at it.
• Pet Brush, Pet Soap and a water-bucket rinse keep pets clean. Wet pets shake themselves dry.
• Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to pet them.

📯 Pet Whistle

Give orders to one pet or to all of them at once:

• Idle: roam near home and look after its own needs.
• Follow: stay with you, even through Nether and End portals.
• Stay: sit down, or stand still if it can’t sit.
• Go There: walk to a spot and stay.
• Rest Here / Wake Up: send it to sleep where it is, or wake it.
• Rest Spot: choose where it sleeps.
• Trick: ask for a trick.

The whistle screen shows a pet’s exact needs and loyalty. It lets you browse all your pets nearby, and opens the Pet Journal, which lists every pet you own and where it is, even in other dimensions.

⚙️ Settings and server tools

• In-game settings from the pet screen, NeoForge’s mod list or Fabric’s Mod Menu.
• Gameplay config: need rates, accidents, illness, search range and home radius. Apply changes with /vanillapets reload.
• Commands: /vanillapets list, release and transfer.
• Letting a pet go: sneak and use a Pet Collar on your pet twice to set it free.
• Death notice: you get a message if one of your pets dies.
• Works with Jade, JEI and REI, and is safe with Sodium and Iris shaders.
