Description
Weapon Enchantment Compat
Weapon Enchantment Compat is a small, data-driven Fabric compatibility mod for Minecraft 1.20.1. It lets datapacks decide which modded weapons may use two enchantments that normally reject those weapon types:
- Backstabbing from Farmer's Delight Refabricated,
- Vanilla Looting.
No third-party weapons are enabled by default!
The mod deliberately ships its compatibility tags with no item entries. Installing the JAR by itself does not whitelist weapons from RPG Series, Soulslike Weaponry, Death Knights, or any other content mod.
Instead, modpack authors can populate normal Minecraft item tags through a datapack via the tags:
#backstabbing_dagger_compat:daggers- additional weapons allowed to receive Farmer's Delight Backstabbing,#weapon_enchantment_compat:looting_weapons- additional weapons allowed to receive vanilla Looting.
What it changes:
Weapon Enchantment Compat only extends enchantment applicability for items placed in those tags. It does not globally convert weapons into knives, swords, or axes.
For Looting, the mod extends the normal enchantment applicability check and includes an anvil-specific compatibility fallback so tagged weapons remain enchantable in modpacks with other anvil/enchantment mixins.
What it does not change:
The mod does not alter:
- Enchantment levels,
- Enchantment effects or damage calculations,
- Anvil XP costs,
- Enchantment conflicts or incompatibilities,
- Existing vanilla or modded weapons that already accept the enchantment,
- Third-party weapons unless a datapack explicitly adds them,
- Entity AI, combat ticks, world generation, or recurring server logic.
There are no tick handlers, entity scans, or recurring runtime tasks.
Datapack setup:
For Minecraft Fabric 1.20.1, create a datapack using pack format 15, and the following structure:
My Weapon Compat/
├── pack.mcmeta
└── data/
├── backstabbing_dagger_compat/
│ └── tags/
│ └── items/
│ └── daggers.json
└── weapon_enchantment_compat/
└── tags/
└── items/
└── looting_weapons.json
Example pack.mcmeta:
{
"pack": {
"pack_format": 15,
"description": "My Weapon Enchantment Compat"
}
}
Backstabbing example
data/backstabbing_dagger_compat/tags/items/daggers.json
{
"replace": false,
"values": [
"examplemod:steel_dagger",
"#examplemod:daggers"
]
}
Looting example
data/weapon_enchantment_compat/tags/items/looting_weapons.json
{
"replace": false,
"values": [
"examplemod:great_axe",
"#examplemod:heavy_weapons"
]
}
Keep "replace": false so multiple datapacks can contribute compatible items at the same time.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Fabric Loader 0.15.0+
- Java 17+
- Farmer's Delight Refabricated (for use with the backstabbing enchant)
For modpack authors
The base JAR is intended to stay neutral and reusable. Put the weapon IDs and existing item tags for your own pack in a separate datapack, allowing compatibility lists to be changed without rebuilding and updating the mod.
This mod was primarily made for the Path of the Ascended Modpack, and as such may not worth with other setups and modpacks. I take no responsility for, and will not fix bugs caused by other implementations or used of this mod outside of the Path of the Ascended modpack.
