Description

Windpump Forge

Wind-powered water for Survival. Build an animated windmill tower that pumps water whenever the wind blows. Connect a Water Tank that carries water on to Sprinklers, which keep your farmland wet and put out fires, all without a single fuel source. Customize the tower with six upgrades, your own banner on the tower and dyed blades, and keep an eye on the weather with the Wind Monitor.

Windpump tower in a farm

Quick Start

Build things in this order:

  1. Place the Windpump Controller first. This is the base of the tower.
  2. Place the Water Tank next. Put it on the lever side of the controller, 2-4 blocks out and level with the controller. It carries the tower's water on to your Sprinklers.
  3. Place Sprinklers last. Any Sprinkler within 64 blocks of the tower is connected automatically with a pipe, so there is no manual piping to do.
  4. Right-click the controller to install upgrades and customize the look.

Your Sprinklers run for as long as the tower's pump runs. When the wind blows, the pump runs and your farmland stays wet. To stop the pump by hand, right-click the controller while crouching, or press the Brake button in the controller screen.

Windpump Controller

A tall animated tower with a turning wheel, shaft and pump. It pumps water while the wind blows, and the head turns by itself to face the wind. In a storm it furls, see Furling below.

Right-click the controller to open its screen:

  • Six upgrade slots (see Upgrades below)
  • Banner slot: put a banner here to give the tower your own designed banner
  • Blade dye slot: put a dye here to colour the blades of the wheel
  • Live readout of wind speed, water output and pump state
  • Brake button to stop the pump by hand

The controller also waters farmland around it while the pump runs, just like a Sprinkler. The radius is set by controllerWaterRadius in the config (default 8, set to 0 to turn it off).

Furling

In strong winds and storms, the tower can furl by turning its head away from the wind, causing the wheel to appear edge-on. This is normal and does not mean the tower is broken. Once the wind calms down, the head turns back to face the wind. Automatic furling requires the Storm Guard upgrade. Furling: wheel turned out of the wind

Water Tank

The link between the tower and your Sprinklers. Place it on the lever side of the tower, 2-4 blocks out and level with the controller (one tank per tower). A window on the front shows the water level.

Sprinkler

Sprays while the tower runs. It waters all farmland within 8 blocks (a 17x17 area) and puts out fires.

  • Connects automatically with a pipe to the tower if it is within 64 blocks
  • Works whenever its tower's pump is running
  • Place several along a field to cover a whole farm
  • Can't be placed within 8 blocks of another Sprinkler, or in a 1-block hole or trench
  • Farmland stays wet for a while after the pump stops

Weather & Wind Monitor

A small screen that shows:

  • The weather
  • Wind speed
  • The direction the wind comes from
  • The pump state and water flow of the nearest windpump within 64 blocks

The LED is green when it is linked to a tower and red when it is not.

Upgrades

Six upgrades, installed in the controller:

  • Lightning Rod: protects the tower from lightning strikes
  • Phantom Repeller: scares phantoms away within 48 blocks
  • Beacon Light: red night signal on top of the tower
  • Silencer: quietens the tower and the tank
  • Storm Guard: brakes the pump before a thunderstorm or very strong wind
  • Efficiency Upgrade: 1.5x water from the pump

Crafting

Every part has a recipe, and every item shows its use and recipe in its tooltip. The tower costs roughly 80 iron and the tank roughly 45 copper. The wheel is made of Windpump Blades combined into Rotor Sections (6 blades each, 3 sections per wheel).

Configuration

Settings such as tank range, sprinkler radius, controller watering radius and machine sounds are in config/windpumpforge-common.toml.

Known Issues

The tower is drawn in full detail at any distance, so many towers in one area can lower FPS.

Requirements

Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer.
