Gears Beyond the Horizon — Modpack Artwork

Gears Beyond the Horizon

Version 1.0.0 is out now — our first full release! Download 1.0.0 or install the complete pack through the CurseForge app.

I started this modpack with a simple wish: to bring back that old Minecraft feeling. Starting the game, seeing the familiar pixelated menu, and feeling excited about the world waiting on the other side.

Back then, I often wondered whether there might be more to discover beyond the next hill, behind a dungeon wall, or far beneath the surface. This pack is my attempt to make some of those possibilities real: more dungeons, more places to explore underground, and caves that reach much deeper. I want you to feel the weight of being far below the world above, surrounded by darkness, more enemies, and the possibility of finding something you have never seen before.

Magic, machines, and improvements inspired by vanilla Minecraft give you different ways to grow stronger. You can build a workshop and explore technology, but I also want exploration, magic, and better equipment to feel rewarding if machines are not your thing.

I hope this pack brings back a little of that anticipation while giving you new reasons to keep exploring. I will keep working on it, refining the details and improving the experience. If you try it, I would love to hear what you enjoy, what could be better, or where you run into problems. Even a few words about how it feels to play would mean a lot.

What makes this pack different

Bloodstones — grow beyond ten hearts

Blood Shards and Bloodstones — our custom items

Extra hearts are a central part of your progression. Collect Blood Shards by mining spawners or defeating the Ender Dragon, then craft and consume Bloodstones. Each Bloodstone adds one extra heart, up to 25 hearts in total. These bonus hearts stay with you between sessions, but death removes one of them. Your ten base hearts are safe — giving every successful expedition a lasting reward and every risky journey something to protect.

Dungeons, deep caves and new horizons

Dungeons and exploration — promotional illustration

Find dungeons and ruins, explore new landscapes and venture into a world reaching down to Y −512. Adventure continues above ground and deep below it, with more places to discover and reasons to prepare for the next trip. You can grow stronger through exploration even if building machines is not your thing.

Tinkers’ Construct — make tools your own

Tinkers’ Construct material items

Build a smeltery, melt metals and cast the parts for your own tools. Combine materials and add modifiers to suit the way you play. Instead of simply replacing a pickaxe, experiment with equipment made for mining, fighting and longer expeditions.

Mekanism — from workshop to factory

Mekanism components for machines and processing

Generate power, process ores and connect machines into automated production lines. Start with a small workshop and expand step by step as you learn. Technology offers another path through the pack, alongside exploration, magic and better equipment.

Made for Gears Beyond the Horizon

Our own additions connect these adventures with practical, vanilla-inspired improvements. Here are some of the things we have built for the pack.

Obsidian — more than a building block

Obsidian Ore, fragments, ingots, equipment and the Obsidian Forge

Mine Obsidian Ore to collect fragments, then smelt them into ingots for tools, weapons and armour. The lava-powered Obsidian Forge gives your workshop a faster way to smelt. Obsidian bricks and smoky glass also turn your discoveries into new building materials.

Copper golems — useful helpers for your base

Copper chest workplace settings

Let copper golems sort supplies while you build or explore. They carry up to 64 items per trip, collect from several copper chests, reach three accessible stacked chest rows and unload parked chest minecarts. Filters and stock targets let you decide what belongs where, while reserved pickup tasks help several golems share the work.

Optional furnace supply and collection settings

Furnace help is optional: enable it to supply normal furnaces, blast furnaces and our Obsidian Forge. Golems refill input and fuel and collect finished items in batches. Smelting XP stays available for you to collect, and wooden supplies are protected from automatic burning.

These menu examples show the Fabric edition of Copper Golem Refined. The pack includes the Forge 1.20.1 edition with these functions; menu appearance can differ.

Our potions — prepare for the journey

Our five custom exploration potions

Mine faster, return home, fit through narrow passages, move quietly or recover with extra protection. Our custom potions give you practical ways to prepare, and the Potion Handbook helps you find their ingredients and brewing steps.

Minecart Revival — give your railway a purpose

Link minecarts with chains and power your train with a furnace cart. Choose the direction, check the remaining fuel and carry yourself or your supplies between favourite places. Smooth acceleration and improved rail travel make a railway worth building again.

Ore Shimmer — included in the pack

Ore Shimmer — soft ore glow and small surface sparkles

A quiet glint in the dark. Ore Shimmer adds soft, ore-coloured shimmer and tiny sparkles to your underground adventures. Adjust their strength and frequency separately in game — no shader required.

Included in the modpack. Set shimmer and sparkle strength and frequency independently in the in-game settings, or turn the effect off to suit your preference.

First full release — 1 November 2026

Version 1.0.0 brings our tested Beta 9 content together as the first full release: deeper exploration, Bloodstones and extra hearts, custom potions and obsidian equipment, Tinkers’ Construct, Mekanism and our own vanilla-inspired additions. Copper Golem Refined 1.0.2 includes the latest sorting, workplace and furnace fixes.

Version 1.0.0 is now publicly available on CurseForge. Get the first full release here. Existing players can keep their worlds; back up your saves before updating. More improvements are in progress — feedback is welcome in the comments!

One installation, the complete package

Install Gears Beyond the Horizon through Install via App, or import the downloaded modpack ZIP into CurseForge. The launcher automatically downloads the matching versions of the included mods:

  • Gears Beyond the Horizon Additions: Our 27 custom components, including brewing, underground discoveries, chunk anchors and village requests.

  • Minecart Revival: Chain-linked minecart trains, furnace-cart fuel controls and improved rail travel, using the Forge 1.20.1 edition.

  • Ore Shimmer: Soft, ore-coloured shimmer and tiny sparkles, with separate in-game controls — no shader required.

  • Copper Golem Refined: Configurable sorting, chest-minecart unloading and optional furnace support, using the Forge 1.20.1 edition with Copper Age Backport.

No separate mod downloads are needed when installing the complete modpack. Downloading the ZIP in a browser is the first step; import it into the launcher to download and install its contents. Minecart Revival is also available separately for players who only want its rail features.

Minecraft Java 1.20.1 · Forge · Singleplayer · Version 1.0.0
Further improvements and compatibility fixes are ongoing. Known limitation: a Dungeon Now Loading room-template issue remains documented in the release notes.
