Sobol SMP

RLCraft is a modpack created by Shivaxi which adds various survival, exploration, and adventure features.  I've spent a pretty stupid amount of time playing solo, but servers I've made with friends always faced the same problems.  I've modified Shiv's modpack to better fit a multiplayer experience; the gameplay and features remain largely unchanged, but tweaks have been made to make the first few hours less hectic and to move some fun mods from the late game to the mid or early game.  
RLCraft and this pack both add a lot to Minecraft, if you've not played around with mods too much before now, many things might be unfamiliar.  Some of the more impactful features include:

This pack is meant for a multiplayer game and encourages a more interactive environment, primarily during the early and mid game.  The changes made are mostly insignificant to a solo experience, but I'd still recommend normal RLCraft if you're just looking to play on your own: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/rlcraft

RLCraft is notoriously deadly, and I've made sure not to change that aspect.  If you approach it as a new game rather than a modified MC, you should learn very quickly how to survive.  Tips for new players: always carry food and water, learn how to make a Grave Scroll, never AFK, and hide if you hear wings.  (Note: most mods aren't configured for MC's subtitle system, but Ice & Fire Dragons works well)

I've cleaned up what I could, but most bugs from Shiv's pack are still present.  I'll update this pack whenever something gets fixed.  Usually closing/opening the game works to fix things.

There are several resource packs included in the pack which are not on by default.  Except for Lycanites Redux which makes most of the stranger creatures look more at home in minecraft, these packs are simple and recommended.  If you want to use Lycanites Redux, the game will warn you about its version being wrong - ignore that.  You'll need to then restart Minecraft.
