FAQ
A: I currently do not have any plans to port the mod, so make no plans for it. I am not outright opposed to it, but am busy perpetually with various projects, and porting will be a vast undertaking.
Q: Why does the mod have a different name (A Squidly Minecraft Movie Additions) on Curseforge?
A: Curseforge does not like the word 'mod' being used in a mod title. The mod's intended name, "A Squidly Minecraft Movie Mod", is still used everywhere else.
Q: Why did you do this.
A: While it might be tempting to disregard the works this mod is based upon as marketing for a film which was marketing for a video game, media that is produced to be disposable is still created by the hands of people. I believe there is an inherit humanity in these works, one which should still be appreciated like any other form of art.
Q: How do you rate A Minecraft Movie?
A: In the process of adaptation, especially from video game to film, there is the fundamental strife of incompatible characteristics between the mediums. Despite similarities, the traits of these mediums require compromise and interpretation, in a distillation of the core of a work.
In the case of Minecraft, this is a property which intentionally has avoided defined narrative or structure in the main game, in favor of a malleable sandbox. Its... success on such aside, leads the film to borrow traits of Minecrafts' spinoffs (Dungeons and Legends), while forming the narrative points around a few characters and one item, while most of the cast are separated from the Minecraft world (referred exclusively to as 'the Overworld', which is a positive) as outsiders, in a traditional "Video Game as Another World" type of film. Sadly though, beyond a few references to the concept of creativity, the film has little more to do with the core of the game.
So, what is left otherwise? A serviceable adventure comedy film. Most moments outside the Overworld are rather mundane, semi-intentionally so for contrast with the adventure... which somehow has a fast pace, but also few locations and questionable editing at times, including two characters being practically written out for what feels like a significant time. The sets are surprisingly well-made and creative, with a great attention to detail in a style inspired by the game, and the action mostly enjoyable outside the ending battle.
The humor (and most dialogue) is pretty hit or miss, though considering I didn't much enjoy the prior works of Jared Hess I've seen, we might just have different humor. Beside some notable moments though, Jack Black stays a consistent highlight. At this point, I think actors like Jack Black, Danny DeVito, and Steve Buscemi prove that you really could just pay enough to put soul into any work.
Overall, I consider the film a 3.5, pretty decent for some vague adventure, primarily an excuse for the sets and actors to shine a bit. It's pretty close to what would be expected from A Minecraft Movie, though this doesn't leave it lacking.
Q: It's not an April Fools prank if it isn't done on April 1st.
A: ONLY A FOOL FOOLS ON APRIL FOOLS.
