Exploration Portals

Story behind

My favourite part of the game is the start. When you open the fresh new world and take your first steps in. You explore the nearby forest and mountains and eventually settle down. And then the exploration is over. Sure, you can gather up resources and go on a long trek to find more biomes, mobs, or whatever you need, but with how minecraft plays, it is more about inventory management, fear of losing your items, and it actually feels like a chore. So I was thinking...what if I download a portal mod of some kind? Something that could teleport me to new places that I can explore anew and return safely home whenever I need? Well that's fine, but there are two problems. The first is..there are not really that many good portal mods out there. And the second? I don't want to be able to teleport anywhere I want instantly. If I find a cool new landmark, I do still want to set up proper transportation there, and not just teleport all the time. And realising that's what I want, I decided to make Exploration Portals

Main Feature

This very minimalistic mod adds a single block. The Exploration Portal. When primed, it creates a paired portal block in a random location within a certain radius (around 2000 blocks. Configurable) Anyone can then freely move between the two portals. This way you walk out of a portal to a new location and can begin your exploration anew, knowing you can return home at any time. At the same time, you cannot use this to make any meaningful transportation system between places you already have since there is no way to force the portal to spawn at a particular place. You just have to go where it takes you.

Setting up an Exploration Portal

  1. Craft an Exploration Portal block
  2. Craft an Exploration Portal core
  3. Place the Exploration Portal wherever you like
  4. Right click the Exploration Portal Block with an Exploration Portal Core. This will generate a paired exploration portal somewhere in the world.
  5. Whenever you want to travel, activate the portal via redstone. This will teleport all living entities in a four block radius to the destination portal. (Don't forget to pack a button or something for your way back ;))
Be careful around your portals. When you punch (left-click) a portal it will decouple from its paired portal. You will then need a new core to activate it again, but doing so will obviously generate a brand new paired portal. The range of the portal generation is configurable via gamerules
