About:

Genetic Animals is an animal realism and breeding improvement mod, a labor of love with years of development! By default, this mod replaces some of the vanilla animals with new entities that have genetics that are based on what you would find in real life. This means there are millions of variations - each animal is truly unique! Currently there are genetics for sheep, cows, mooshrooms, pigs, rabbits, chickens, llamas, axolotls, sea turtles and even mooblooms that are all based on real genetics, as well as a dash of fantasy genetics. All domesticated animals have layering texture variations, and their models change dynamically according to their genetics. Animals also have animations that add realism and charm. Blinking, ear twitches, tail wagging, sleeping, and more!

  • 📋 More Genetic Animal variants are planned to be added in the future, such as horses, bees, parrots, cats, dogs, foxes, and more. This mod plans to only add genetic variants for animals available in vanilla Minecraft.
  • 🔨 This mod is for Forge; there are no plans to develop for Fabric or support older versions of Minecraft.
  • 📚 If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the discord or check out the info available on the wiki.
  • 💖 Try out the mod and if you love it please support me on Patreon! It really helps!

See the below video for examples of what others have created with the mod!

More On Genetics:

This mod adds real genetics; if you breed two animals together, their offspring are a product of their parent's genes, and each animal's variations in size, colour, body shape, drops, and more are determined by their genes rather than by random chance. Anything you see, you can breed for. Some animals may even have genetics that give them new drops, increased drops, or lose ones they would typically have – these traits can be specifically bred for. You can even recreate real life breeds and then cross them together to see the result, as all breeds and cross breeds are possible with this mod. Pull out your Punnett squares and prepare to dive into the world of genetics!

Genetic Animals in the wild will have genetic variations based on the environment they spawn in, so be sure explore the world and various climates for more variety! Long haired cows, for instance, tend to spawn in colder climates, and thinner, leather based sheep tend to spawn in warmer climates.

Gameplay Tweaks:

Several new gameplay mechanics have been added to the animals. Animals by default have genders, and you must breed a male and female together to get offspring. Instead of instantly giving birth, animals will become pregnant or lay eggs and time must pass before offspring are born. Genetic Animals have hunger and need food to eat in order to provide resources and to carry a pregnancy. If provided with space and grass, the animals will happily feed themselves, so pasture your animals whenever possible. If you don't want your animals munching on the grass or just can't keep them outside, there is a new hayblock for feeding that is created when you use a sharp tool on regular hayblocks placed in the world. Genetic Animals will eat these hayblocks on their own over time. Animals will also eat a much larger variety of food items. Genders, pregnancy duration and hunger tweaks are all configurable.

Information such as an animal's gender, hunger level, and pregnancy progress, and more can all by viewed in their GUI, which can be accessed the same way a vanilla horse's GUI can be accessed - by crouching and right clicking. The GUI is also where you can equip tack on your Genetic Animals, or, in newer versions, use photomode to export pictures of your beloved animals. If you name your animals with a nametag before breeding them, their names will be displayed in the sire/dam section of their offspring's GUI.

Genetic Animals will also lay down to sleep during the night. While sleeping, if they are not hungry, animals will heal themselves. Chickens will also seek out horizontal posts that they sleep on preferentially.

More behavioral tweaks are planned to be added in future versions, such as tameness.

Compatibility:

Genetic Animals will spawn in any biomes their vanilla counterparts can spawn in, including biomes from other mods. Forge tags have been added to GA items for recipe compat, as well as recipes to convert GA drops to their vanilla equivalents. It is recommended you install a mod like JEI or REI in order to see the recipes.

There are also extensive configuration options available, allowing you to change multiple factors related to breeding, spawning, villager trades, and more! For Minecraft versions 1.16.5+, there are additional config options available that allow you to set what items your Genetic Animals can eat, as well as whether the item will trigger breeding – this includes items from other mods you have installed!

Join the discord to find datapacks and scripts made by the community to add even more compatibility, or even share ones you have made!

Genetic Animals has and endless amount of variation for sheep, cows, mooshrooms, pigs, rabbits, chickens, llamas, turtles, axolotls and even mooblooms that are all based on real genetics. All domesticated animals get variation in their models and every animal gets layering texture variations. Each animal also has a set of animations that make them fit much better with minecraft's latest mobs and should help the game feel much more cohesive.
