Description
# HG's Backpack Smelter
A small Forge mod for **Minecraft 1.20.1** that lets you smelt **whole containers at once**. Fill a shulker box or a Sophisticated Backpack with raw materials, toss it into a furnace with some fuel, and when the cook finishes, **every smeltable item inside is converted in a single go** — the container itself is the output.
No more feeding furnaces one item at a time. 🍖⛏️
## How It Works
1. Fill a **shulker box** (or a **Sophisticated Backpack**) with raw materials — raw ores, sand, clay, uncooked food, anything.
2. Put the container into a **Furnace**, **Blast Furnace** or **Smoker** and add fuel, just like a normal item.
3. When the progress bar completes, every item in the container is converted according to the vanilla recipes of that furnace type:
- **Furnace** → `smelting` recipes (raw iron → iron ingot, sand → glass, clay ball → brick, …)
- **Blast Furnace** → `blasting` recipes (ores → ingots)
- **Smoker** → `smoking` recipes (raw food → cooked food)
4. The **container itself is output** as the result — color, custom name, upgrades and UUID all preserved.
## Supported Containers
- **All 17 vanilla shulker box colors** (base + 16 dyed). Item data lives in the box's own NBT, so the conversion reads and writes it directly — everything else about the box (color, custom name) is kept intact.
- **Sophisticated Backpacks** (all 6 backpack types, optional integration). Backpack contents live in a UUID-based separate storage, converted through the mod's own API at cook completion.
## Features
- 🔥 **One container = one cook.** A full 27-slot shulker box smelts in a single 10-second run.
- ⏱️ **Fixed cook time of 200 ticks (10 seconds)** and **0.7 XP** per container — same as cooking a single vanilla item.
- ✅ **Unsmeltable items are kept as-is** — tools, upgrades, dyes and anything without a matching recipe stay untouched, stack sizes preserved.
- 🔁 **Repeatable** — containers are not marked in any way; refill and smelt again.
- 🎯 **Conversion happens exactly at the completion tick.** Pulling the container out early (or igniting without finishing) never converts contents by accident.
- 🧩 **No Mixins, no reflection** — uses a single Access Transformer. Reliable and compatible.
- 📦 **Data-driven** — cook time, XP and the container tag are plain JSON recipes, fully overridable by datapacks.
- 🖥️ **Server-safe** — conversion is gated on real furnace block entities, so JEI, the recipe book and other GUIs can never trigger it.
## Compatibility
- **Sophisticated Backpacks is optional.** Since v1.1.0 the dependency is soft: without the mod installed, shulker box smelting works perfectly and there are no tag errors at load. With it installed, backpacks are smelted too.
- **JEI / recipe book safe** — viewing recipes never converts containers.
- **Nested containers are excluded** — a shulker box inside a backpack (or vice versa) is never converted, preventing cascade smelting.
## Requirements
- Minecraft **1.20.1**
- Forge **47.x** (any 47+ build)
- Optional: **Sophisticated Backpacks** 3.x and **Sophisticated Core** 1.x for backpack smelting
## FAQ
**Can I smelt a backpack that has a shulker box inside?**
No. The shared recipe table deliberately excludes this mod's own container recipes, so nested containers are never converted.
**What happens to items without a smelting recipe?**
They stay exactly as they were, with their stack sizes unchanged.
**Does it work with other container mods?**
Only shulker boxes and Sophisticated Backpacks are supported. Other container types are ignored.
**Is this client-only or server-required?**
The mod works on both sides; install it on the server (and clients if you want it on dedicated servers).
