Not Enough Jellyfish: The Jellyfish of the Week (NEJ)

Not Enough Jellyfish: The Jellyfish of the Week (NEJ) is a Minecraft mod all about jellyfish, strange creatures, powerful equipment, new Villager professions, and the mysterious Jellyfish of the Week.

The mod adds 9 different jellyfish species, a complete jellyfish farming system, special weapons and tools, new storage, Jellyfish Crates, two new Villager professions, and an upgrade system that can make your equipment incredibly powerful.

9 New Jellyfish

NEJ adds nine different jellyfish and jellyfish-like creatures to Minecraft. Every species has its own real-world scientific name and characteristics.

  • Portuguese Man o' War — Physalia physalis
The Portuguese Man o' War is a fascinating siphonophore. Although it looks like a single animal, it is actually a colony of specialized organisms working together. It is famous for its long stinging tentacles.

  • Praya Dubia — Praya dubia
A deep-sea siphonophore that lives far below the ocean surface. It is known for its enormous potential length and is one of the most fascinating creatures of the deep sea.

  • Nomura's Jellyfish — Nemopilema nomurai
One of the world's largest jellyfish species. Nomura's jellyfish can grow to an enormous size and is mainly found in the waters around East Asia.

  • Moon Jellyfish — Aurelia aurita
One of the most recognizable jellyfish species. The Moon Jellyfish has a translucent bell and characteristic ring-shaped structures that can be seen through its body.

  • Compass Jellyfish — Chrysaora hysoscella
Named for the distinctive markings on its bell, which can resemble the lines of a compass. It is a colorful jellyfish found in marine waters.

  • Mauve Stinger — Pelagia noctiluca
A relatively small but strongly stinging jellyfish. It can produce bioluminescence and is commonly associated with warmer marine waters.

  • Lion's Mane Jellyfish — Cyanea capillata
One of the largest known jellyfish species. Its long tentacles and dense mass of oral arms resemble a lion's mane.

  • Giant Phantom Jellyfish — Stygiomedusa gigantea
A mysterious deep-sea jellyfish that has rarely been observed. It has a huge bell and long, ribbon-like oral arms.

  • Immortal Jellyfish — Turritopsis dohrnii
The famous "immortal" jellyfish. Under certain conditions, it can revert to an earlier stage of its life cycle instead of simply continuing toward death.

Jellyfish Farming

All nine jellyfish can be farmed using Jellyfish Food.

The central block for this system is the Jellyfish Farm.

The Jellyfish Farm is craftable and plays an important role in the mod. It is also the job block used by the Jellyfish Fan Villager.

With the Jellyfish Farm, you can spawn any of the nine jellyfish species.

Spawning a jellyfish costs:

 3 Coal

 1 Jellyfish Food

 1 Jellyfish

After providing the required materials, you can choose which jellyfish species you want to spawn.

This makes the Jellyfish Farm one of the most important blocks for building a reliable jellyfish supply.

Jellyfish Fan

The Jellyfish Fan uses the Jellyfish Farm as its job block.

The Jellyfish Fan can sell items such as:

  Jellyfish

  Jellyfish Keys

  Jellyfish Crates

  Other jellyfish-related items

The Jellyfish Fan is therefore an important part of the Jellyfish of the Week progression system.

Dealer

The second new profession is the Dealer, whose job block is an Anvil.

The Dealer sells unusual and normally unobtainable items, including:

  Kidneys

  Illegal items like:

                         Command Blocks

                         Barrier Blocks

                         Debug Sticks

Other blocks and items that normally cannot be obtained in Survival

The Dealer is essentially the Villager for strange, forbidden, and normally unobtainable items.

Jellyfish Crates

Jellyfish Crates are one of the main ways to obtain Jellyfish of the Week.

To open a Jellyfish Crate, right-click it with the appropriate Jellyfish Key. You will then be given several options.

Unlock and Get Jellyfish of the Week

This option consumes:

   1 Jellyfish Crate

   1 Jellyfish Key

   1 Jellyfish

In return, you receive a Jellyfish of the Week.

This is the main way to build up a collection of Jellyfish of the Week.

Unlock Jellyfish of the Week

This option unlocks the Jellyfish of the Week without giving you one.

It still consumes the Jellyfish Crate and Key, but does not require an additional Jellyfish.

Because you do not receive a Jellyfish of the Week, this option is generally less useful if your goal is to upgrade equipment.

Unlock Jellyfish of the Week and Get Jellyfish of the Week Costume

The third option is considerably more expensive.

It requires additional items, including a Jellyfish of the Week and a Jellyfish Costume, but gives access to the Jellyfish of the Week Costume.

Jellyfish of the Week Levels

Jellyfish of the Week can be combined to create higher-level versions.

The progression works like this:

4× Jellyfish of the Week → 1× Jellyfish of the Week Level 1

4× Jellyfish of the Week Level 1 → 1× Jellyfish of the Week Level 2

4× Jellyfish of the Week Level 2 → 1× Jellyfish of the Week Level 3

This makes collecting large amounts of Jellyfish of the Week extremely important if you want to reach the highest equipment upgrades.

Jellyfish Chest

NEJ also adds the Jellyfish Chest.

It has far more storage space than a normal chest, holding almost as many items as four Double Chests combined.

It is especially useful for storing the large number of jellyfish, Jellyfish of the Week, tools, and other items that you can collect throughout the mod.

New Weapons & Tools

NEJ adds a variety of unique weapons, tools, and special equipment.

Jellyfish Costume

A special helmet designed around the jellyfish theme.

Jellyfish Sword

A powerful sword belonging to the Jellyfish equipment set.

Jellyfish Axe

The Jellyfish Axe deals extremely high damage, but attacks very slowly.

Jellyfish Pickaxe

A special pickaxe belonging to the Jellyfish equipment set.

Jellyfish Bow

A bow that shoots jellyfish instead of arrows.

Jellyfish Crossbow

The Jellyfish Crossbow takes the idea even further.

It fires jellyfish extremely quickly, almost like a machine gun.

Jellyfish Staff

The Jellyfish Staff has a very large range.

When right-clicked, it can create a glass sphere filled with water around the player. This can be useful for things such as protecting yourself from incoming arrows or creating a temporary defensive barrier.

Water Staff

The Water Staff works similarly to the Jellyfish Staff.

When right-clicked, it places water around the player.

If you keep holding right-click, it continues placing water, allowing you to use it for movement and, under the right conditions, almost fly with it.

TNT Bow

The TNT Bow fires TNT instead of normal arrows.

TNT Axe

Hit a mob with the TNT Axe and the mob explodes.

The downside is its extremely low durability. The TNT Axe has very little durability, so it is not designed for long-term use.

Upgrading Your Equipment

Most of the special tools and weapons in NEJ can be upgraded all the way to Level 5.

The exceptions are:

  • Jellyfish Staff — maximum Level 2

  • Water Staff — maximum Level 2

To upgrade an item, place the tool or weapon in the center of a Crafting Table and surround it with 8 Jellyfish of the Week items of the required level.

The upgrade progression is:

  • Level 1 → Level 2: 8× Jellyfish of the Week

  • Level 2 → Level 3: 8× Jellyfish of the Week Level 1

  • Level 3 → Level 4: 8× Jellyfish of the Week Level 2

  • Level 4 → Level 5: 8× Jellyfish of the Week Level 3

This creates a complete progression system where you need to collect more and more valuable Jellyfish of the Week items to reach the highest equipment levels.

And the higher the upgrade level gets, the more powerful the equipment becomes.

At the highest levels, some weapons can deal extremely massive amounts of damage.

The Jellyfish of the Week

Whether you want to build a massive jellyfish collection, farm rare species, fill your Jellyfish Chest, trade with the Jellyfish Fan, visit the Dealer for unusual items, or upgrade your equipment to Level 5, Not Enough Jellyfish: The Jellyfish of the Week adds an entire jellyfish-focused progression system to Minecraft.
