Disclaimer: This modpack is currently in pre-alpha. Core systems are playable, but progression is not yet "completable" end-to-end; there's no quest line to finish yet, and many systems below are still being configured and balanced. See the Current vs. Planned breakdown below before downloading.

Skill Tree

Currently Playable

  • Custom modern/futuristic city generated with Lost Cities
  • Passcode/security system: find passcodes and keycards to access special areas and high quality rewards
  • Skill tree (Puffish Skills/Attributes) with a large custom skill tree
  • Tier'd ore & loot system (T1 in progress)
  • Survival mechanics: temperature, diet system, medical items, natural regeneration disabled
  • Mekanism as the core tech/automation mod
  • NPC factions (Survivor, Military, Criminal): trading, basic interactions

Not Yet Available

  • FTB Quests / storyline progression (planned)
  • Full NPC quest lines per region (planned)
  • T2+ tiers, ores, and areas (in progress / planned)
  • Full weapon, armor, currency, and loot balancing — still actively being configured

Tier'd World System

The world is planned around progressively harder regions, each with its own environment, ores, mobs, and story. Mob and horde difficulty is tied to the region/tier itself, not distance from spawn. Players are free to skip around and tackle tiers out of order if they're geared for it.

  • T1: Modern/Futuristic Urban City | Plains (current) Main playable tier right now. Ores spawn across all Y-levels, so early ores like gold and iron can be found right at the surface.
  • T2: Residential | Cold Area | Snow Plains (planned)
  • T3: Military Buildings | Hot Area | Badlands (planned)

T4 & T5 — Space / Alien Civilization (far future / vision) Introduces a dimension or space mod, adding Moon and space city exploration (T4) and an alien civilization (T5). Not fully planned out yet, but this is the long-term direction.

Beyond T5 (vision, not planned in detail) Further tiers are possible — custom planets, galaxies, and dimensions.

Each tier is meant to have its own storyline, NPC bases, region-specific mobs/bosses, and progression path, on top of introducing a new survival mechanic.

Version 2.2.1 (OLD)

Apocalypse Begins [Zombie Apocalypse] is a modern zombie apocalypse survival modpack. It includes a handcrafted modern city, specialized survival mechanics, and a growing zombie threat that escalates over time. The goal of the modpack is to craft the vaccine & survive 100 Days. It is designed for the hardcore gamemode, but can be enjoyed casually too.

Combat & Apocalypse

  • Superb Warfare - Firearms, melee weapons, armor, turrets, and missiles.
  • Better Combat - Melee weapon combat overhaul.
  • The Hordes - Hordes strike each player periodically, increasing in difficulty each time.
  • Improved Mobs - Increased mob intelligence. Zombies will learn to mine blocks, steal items, and use off-hand items such as ender pearls and lava buckets. Zombies come in all shapes and sizes, with increasing stats scaling with difficulty.
  • Artifacts - Loot you can find throughout the city that usually gives you a massive buff.

Survival Mechanics

  • First Aid - Limb-based health system where you manually bandage wounded areas to heal.
  • Diet - Managing to keep a diet above 50% for all categories gives you regeneration. If any falls below 5%, you get the hunger status effect. This requires you to eat a variety of food.
  • Always Eat - You can eat past full hunger bars in order to meet nutritional standards.
  • Tough as Nails - Thirst and temperature are necessary components to manage. Finding, purifying, and storing drinkable water will be a new challenge. Temperature will affect where you can go at any time, forcing you to build bases and technology to keep you at room temperature.
  • Hardcore Revival - Revive your downed teammates.
  • Parcool - Navigate the world using parkour to outrun your enemies and reach what they can't quicker.
  • Hardcore Lite - If you die, you lose a heart (in non-hardcore gamemode).

Technology & Progression

  • Create - Using stress to automate farms, generate materials, and build secure contraptions to protect yourself from the zombies.
  • Create New Age - Introduces electricity generation and nuclear reactors to power everything from vehicles to storage systems
  • Create Slice & Dice - Integrates with Farmer's Delight to allow automation of managing your diet.
  • Pufferfish's Skills - Use skill points to upgrade your attributes like max health to increase your survivability. Earn skill points by slaying mobs.

Multiplayer & Immersion

  • Simple Voice Chat - Play and chat with friends using proximity voice chat.
  • What Are They Up To - See your friend's inventories and UI's when they are accessing it.
  • Presence Footsteps - Use your hearing to locate zombie threats approaching you.
  • Open Parties & Claims - Claim chunks, forceload your contraptions, and build a secure base with your team.

World & Exploration

  • Xaero's World Map - Mark waypoints to your base or points of interest and see your teammates on the map.
  • Lost Cities - Custom modern city generation with a plethora of handpicked loot. Navigated using Superb Warfare ground vehicles along highways and roads.
  • Serene Seasons - Forces you to stockpile food for winter and prepare a warm base as farming in winter is much harder and colder.
  • Nature's Compass - Find any biome you want using a special compass.

Storage & Quality of Life

  • Sophisticated Backpacks - Carry massive amounts of loot at once as you explore, with no limit to how many backpacks you can have.
  • Refined Storage - Set up a mass storage system at your base with automated appendages and auto-sorted grid views.
  • Client Sort - Sort your inventory & chests. Transfer items between inventories with one click.
  • XP Tome - Store your xp for scenarios where you may lose it.
  • Corpse Mod - Collect your items after death with one click.

Optimization & Performance

This modpack was designed with performance in mind (especially since the world is in a memory chip shortage). It keeps the use of heavy mods low and also sticks to default minecraft terrain generation to massively boost performance that would otherwise be lost.

DRAM Recommendations

  • Playable - 2048 MB (using Distant Horizons or shaders is NOT recommended)
  • Recommended - 4096 MB (can use Distant Horizons and shaders)
  • Beautiful Graphics - 4096 MB - 8192 MB (can use far Distant Horizons render distances at roughly 256+)

VRAM Recommendations

  • Playable - Integrated Graphics (using Distant Horizons or shaders is NOT recommended)
  • Recommended - 2048 MB - 6144 MB (can use Distant Horizons and shaders)
  • Beautiful Graphics - 8192 MB+ (can use far Distant Horizons render distances and high-end profiles for shaders)

⚠️ WARNINGS

  • Do NOT use Distant Horizons for chunk generation. It is disabled by default. Use Chunky instead.
  • Do NOT destroy Create: New Age blocks with explosions from Superb Warfare.
  • Please use AB[ZA]-2.2.1-SERVER-PACK.zip for the server pack. The AB[ZA]-2.2.1-Lite.zip version is a client pack that is an easier version of the modpack. Its corresponding server pack is AB[ZA]-2.2.1-Lite-SP.zip.

Known Bugs & Glitches

This modpack does contain a few bugs. Bugs are patched according to their severity (game breaking or not). Some trivial bugs may not be addressed (if I'm too incompetent to do so 💀). Sometimes bugs can be solved by updated corresponding mods to newer versions, but is often delayed / un-doable due to compatibility or dependency issues.

🟢 Solved / Mitigated
🟡 Unsolved Minor Bug
🟠 Unsolved Moderate Bug
🔴 Unsolved Critical Bug (Game Crashing / Unplayable)

  1. 🟡 Certain block entities fail to render until interacted with (e.g., beds, Create items). This bug is NOT game breaking or significant, but it is noticeable.
  2. 🟢 Using chunk generation from distant horizons breaks the city generation. It is resolved using Chunky.
  3. 🟡 Random floating mobs in an idle state (non-aggressive or dead). Usually solved by restarting the game / server.
  4. 🔴 Destroying Create: New Age blocks with explosions from Superb Warfare causes the game / server to crash.
  5. 🟡 Using shaders while rendering Superb Warfare entities causes a performance dip, noticeable on lower end PCs.
  6. 🟡 Backpacks have a GUI formatting mistake where upgrade slots go.
  7. 🟡 Background music plays while in-world music plays if your in the pause menu.
  8. 🟡 Vanilla music sometimes plays (not the intended function).
  9. 🟡 If you leave a dedicated server while chunky is generating chunks, the server may crash (could be on the condition that no players are online).
