I didn't really get past the pack's early game, but I still feel it's important to document my experience

I'm a beginner when it comes to tech mods, so I decided to try this since I saw a lot of people praising it for being beginner-friendly and creative

The start is fine, just harvesting the alien world's "stone" to make the basic stuff you'll need. The textures of the custom content is kinda rough, the two types of stone I found, for example, are way too similar and the colors lack contrast. Moving on, after this you're basically just trapped in a loop of gathering stone, pulverizing it, melting it into bars, and trying to make the pack's singularities. This process is really slow, took me 2 hours to get to the point where you get the transmutation thingy. There just aren't many ways to automate anything yet since, to my knowledge (if there is then it's not very well taught to the player), you can't make item pipes at this point in progression. You also can't build, since blocks are so scarce.

That's when I quit. The early game just takes waaay too long to get through with practically no fun things to do in the meantime, you just kind of mine and wait and make food if you need to and that's it

One thind I did like was how at one point you start using things from your base to craft new things, slowly taking away the infinite energy sources you have at the start, I think this could've been really cool if after half an hour of grinding you had to get rid of all your energy sources and start to generate stuff yourself, but that's not really what happens

I'm sure once you actually get to the mods in the pack it gets more interesting, but honestly it seems to me it would just play like a kitchen-sink skyblock pack, with a few differences in the setting

It has been a good long while since I played this so bear with me. As someone who was always interested in tech packs but overwhelmed by the grind and the weird recipes, Cuboid Outpost was a breath of fresh air. It got me interested in tech again. Overall, beginners to tech mods could definitely find use with this pack as it is pretty in-depth in certain quests and guides you through tech progression. The environment is very empty, though. There is little exploration.

Cuboid Outpost is a modpack that does away with the traditional start of a world. You are on a barren planet with a pre built high-tech home that comes with solar/wind power and other basic machinery.

Resource generation is unconventional in that after reaching a certain amount of an ore, it becomes possible to infinitely duplicate it. This felt well thought and a breath of fresh air to conventional modpacks that have scaling resource collectors.

The quest book is excellently crafted, guiding the player through progression without being too hand holdy. As someone who was completely new to the Create mod too it felt like this modpack provided a perfect introduction in the form of its quest section.

The modpack is good for short to mid length playthroughs with enough content to keep a player invested for around 40 hours but YMMV.

The best description I can give is this feels like an anti-expert pack where resource bottlenecks and gating are almost non existent. Players picking this up would find a well crafted and thought out modpack so give it a try!

Cuboid Outpost is a Psuedo-sky/stoneblock pack where you start in an outpost (that's more of a rectangular prism, to be honest) with the goal of escaping the endlessly superflat pocket dimension you're stuck in, with the help of posthumous instructions from a team of scientists. It's primarily focused around technology and building resource generating infrastructure.

Tutorialization is a strong point of the pack, especially as a lot of it is done through an entertaining narrative. All the core mods have extensive documentation on the basics and how to use them to progress - If you want to learn about mods and don't feel like playing FTB Academy or University, this is a great alternative for new players.

I wasn't feeling up to the end game creative item grind, but it's clearly optional and not presented as a FOMO "If you didn't do this did you really complete the pack?" obligation. I can't speak to the total time investment for that, but without going for the creative items my playthrough was probably around 50-60 hours long with a little goofing around.

Overall I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot if any of this sounded interesting!

Cuboid Outpost Modpack

Cuboid Outpost Luxury Edition is now available for 1.20.1!

Head over to the Cuboid Outpost Luxury Edition if you want to play Cuboid Outpost on Minecraft 1.20.1:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/cuboid-outpost-le

Cuboid Outpost 1.16 blurb:

The basics:

You're stranded on a barren planet, life as you knew it has come to an abrupt end, and you need to recreate civilization. There are a few twists and turns along the way of course!

You start off at Cuboid Outpost 42, with minimal supplies but some decent equipment, only to find out that the Science Division at Cuboid Corp (tm) have accidentally started a chain reaction that very shortly will bring about the total annihilation of your home planet. Effectively, you're stranded! Luckily there was just enough time for your supervisor to put together a digital survival guide to help you survive, restart life, and even travel to new dimensions. It'll involve a bit of hard work, but you're up to the task, right?

Who this pack is for:

I designed this to be more of a beginner to intermediate tech pack for those just getting into Modded Minecraft, or who are looking for something not too hard / expert, or if you're just wanting something to play that's a tiny bit different. As a result, while there are quite a few mods in the pack, I've intentionally kept the number of alternatives for things low (e.g. for digital storage there's only Applied Energistics 2 at first, but channels are disabled to make it easier to work with - Refined Storage becomes available later on), and the storyline requirements for mods are very light for the most part.

Some great content mods have been added too to keep things interesting and a bit different. And then there are a few unique mods that you won't have seen in any other pack before too - so hopefully there's something for everyone.

What you can expect:

  • A slightly different start to most packs
  • A skyblock-like experience without the skyblock. In other words, a bit of mining, a bit of Ex Nihilo Sequentia, and some "odd" recipes
  • A lot of quests
  • New ores, items, blocks and machines specifically made for this modpack
  • A different way to get to the Nether or the End (at least the first time!)
  • Some additional content mods to give a richer experience in the End and the Nether (as well as in the final dimension)
  • A mod pack you could rush through, but would probably enjoy taking your time on
  • ... and hopefully a bit of fun along the way!

Special Thanks

I'd like to extend special thanks (in no particular order) to the following people, without whom this pack would not exist:

  • legally_clueless and bobshua - for their support, enthusiasm and great ideas!
  • Ashrem, Chaynne, DelfCo, Wildersteak and Chris S. for helping with the early beta testing.
  • Ector Vynk - for his YouTube series' on modded minecraft and his Twitch streams - lots of his ideas and commentary helped me formulate my own mod and modpack ideas.
  • Benbenlaw - his Seaopolis modpack was inspirational (play it if you haven't done so yet!)
  • SilentChaos512 - for his YouTube series on creating 1.16 mods
  • Thomas at TechnoVision - for his YouTube series on modded minecraft with Forge
  • BlakeBr0 - for Extended Crafting's Compressor, which I based my Quantum Collapser idea on.
  • Qelifern (pizzaatime), XenoMustache - for Iron Furnaces, which I based my simplified furnaces on.
  • cpw, alexbegt, progwml6 - for Iron Chests, which I based my (dumbed-down) chests on.
  • 852Duarte, P3NG00 - for More Crafting Tables, which I based my crafting tables on.
  • kwpugh - for inspiration for the Smashers, based on the Hammers in the Easy Steel & More mod.
  • All other mod makers who have helped or inspired me along the way - too many list here!

Recommended Settings

  • 6GB RAM, although you could probably run on around 4GB, but your mileage may vary.
