TLDR: Long, fun, immersive, somewhat grindy story-driven progression pack with a well crafted custom world and many unique mechanics. Personally believe it is worth trying. Performance is not the best.

The only people said to have finished Journey Beyond the Abyss (to my knowledge) are the creator, austinsupercar, and his brother. Either way the actual list of people who have completed the pack officially on its curseforge page is empty!

This pack is very hard to say the least, but very rewarding. In other expert packs you often have to just embrace the grind, and in JBTA this is also very much something you can do. What is interesting though is that, yes, there is always an obvious, mindlessly grindy way to progress, but the pack will often have alternative ways to get resources that are much faster. The pack organically encourages you to do things that are not explicitly spelt in its quest book: exploring the world, investing in your millenaire town, interacting with various custom NPC's, checking for new improved recipes in the recipe book, and progressing in the story to gain more "knowledge". I know this is mostly just reiterating the stuff already said in the pack description, but I want to emphasize that these things make the world JBTA is set in feel immersive and dynamic and make the progression fun.

There are things I could definitely see turning people off from even trying the pack or continuing it once they have started. Obviously the length (600 - 2000 hr estimate) of completion makes it seem daunting, but unlike most other expert packs, there is always something you can be doing during that time; not just waiting for a recipe so you can continue. Another thing is the way certain items are gated behind gamestages. The pack makes you drop items you don't "have knowledge for" as a way of introducing lore to the mysterious books of knowledge you find in the abyss that grant you new "skills" (unlocking new mods) upon reading them. It is a very annoying and a somewhat artificial way of gating progression, but I can understand the decision behind it. There is also pollution of the realms, which may not be most people's cup of tea. The weight limit mechanic may also be extremely annoying before one gets access to carriable storage, but like the other things I mentioned, it fits with the pack's theme.

The performance is also not great. The curseforge page recommends 8-10GB of RAM allocation. I'm able to run it with 7 (as that's all I can give) but it's not silky smooth. Either way one needs a pretty decent computer to run this, making it not very accessible. I suspect the performance issues likely result from how many "dynamic" things are going on, as the main island with its millenaire town is supposedly always chunk loaded.

Ok this rant is getting too long, I'll stop here. Give the pack a try if you can!

Want to play Journey Beyond the Abyss on a server?

Akliz provides automatic installation and updates for the pack with excellent server performance!

==================================================================

Welcome to your doo- er, I mean, Journey Beyond the Abyss!

This pack is a semi-hardcore modpack focused on immersion! Your journey begins when you find yourself stuck on top of a sandbar in the middle of an unknown ocean next to a seemingly bottomless trench and a strange platform.

As you reveal more of the story, you soon discover the dark secret the Abyss holds. As you progress and explore your surroundings, you will discover a plethora of islands, dungeons, underwater cities, and even ghost ships, along with a few easter eggs left by the sneaky developers.

The pack uses a progression system that consists of Game Stages, Custom NPCs, and FTB quests that force the player to keep to the story to get through the pack. Just about every recipe has been changed to ensure the pack gets progressively harder and more complex as more mods become unlocked.

During your adventure, you will come across many deadly adversaries, be in microscopic viruses that infect you or incredibly strong monsters. On top of this, the player must also worry about temperature and weight, both of which can prove to be just as deadly if left unchecked.

Unlike most hardcore modpacks, every progression point is set up like a puzzle, requiring players to stray from the quest book and find alternatives to getting resources versus the lazy and hard way. There are plenty of efficient recipes that either hide or unlock as you go through the world but so long as you look, you will find a solution.

The pack is divided into 13 chapters, each chapter containing its own unique challenges and milestones. With each chapter unlocked, they add more layers of difficulty and complexity, such as various kinds of mobs spawning naturally, to recipes that require redesigning your base.

After reading all that, you might think that this pack was made for experienced players, but the pack itself is structured for any kind of player, both new or old. So long as you can think outside the box, you can do wonders!

==================================================================

Notes!

ESTIMATED completion time: 800 - 2000 hours

You unlock easier recipes for otherwise grindy or hard-to-craft items, so always check JEI when you unlock a new stage!

For those who don’t understand how the crafting system works at the beginning of the game, here’s a neat gif to help you out:

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/primitive-crafting

If you are "spontaneously" getting "Infinite duration nausea" don't panic you either A: Got hit by an infected zombie, B: Eaten raw food, or C: Got a tropical virus from an infected passive mob (if only masks were a thing in minecraft :) ).

All effects are capped at 30 mins (normally sicknesses last about 5 - 15 mins) so you don't have to worry about needlessly losing a life over a small mistake (There is a mob grace period. Take advantage of it or alternatively live on the platform, if you must live on the island there are beds in the village so you can sleep before mobs start spawning).
