I can't fault the performance of the fabric loader and the fabric API and definitely can't deny how much easier this API makes developing than just using mixins. However, this API is still missing some very useful features that loaders such as Neoforge has baked in like extra events, more data driven content support and a native energy system. Saying that, the fabric API has matured a lot over time and the collaboration with neoforge to standardise #c: tags was a very useful endeavour.

All around useful mod for fabric, but it would be nice to see some things brought in line with Neoforge's provisions. I would recommend this API for anyone trying to make lightweight mods compatible with the fabric ecosystem!

Every single mod that does anything for Fabric requires this to keep the developers slightly sane.

Provides what I would describe as the bare minimum for doing anything with a mod running fabric loader, and allows the loader to update faster as it does not require the developers to update API that could break between versions.

About

Description

Fabric API is the core library for the most common hooks and inter-compatibility measures utilized by mods using the Fabric toolchain.

  • Fabric’s APIs are lightweight and modular, making porting faster and game instances leaner.
  • Fabric development targets snapshots as well as release versions, allowing earlier mod updates and more informed community planning.
  • The Fabric toolchain is available for everyone to use - even if you only want to use some of it!

Installation

Fabric comes in two parts:

  • Fabric Loader: Minecraft version independent, provides the essentials of mod loading and rudimentary modding
  • Fabric API: Minecraft version specific, a mod like any other, provides all sorts of APIs  for interoperability and convenience (this CurseForge project)

Instructions:

  1. Install Fabric Loader from the Fabric website - there is an installer for the vanilla launcher and dedicated servers, other launchers including the Curse App may do this automatically
  2. Optionally try to run the game to verify the installation and create the mods folder. There should be Fabric related log entries and the main menu will mention Fabric at the bottom next to the Minecraft version.
  3. Download Fabric API for the desired Minecraft version from this page and put the jar file in the mods folder like any ordinary mod

More information and full installation instructions can be found on the Fabric website and support is available through the Fabric discord server.

This is SEPARATE from the Fabric loader! You need both for most mods! Keep in mind the project requires the Fabric mod loader!

Fabric API

Essential hooks for modding with Fabric.

Fabric API is the library for essential hooks and interoperability mechanisms for Fabric mods. Examples include:

  • Exposing functionality that is useful but difficult to access for many mods such as particles, biomes and dimensions
  • Adding events, hooks and APIs to improve interoperability between mods.
  • Essential features such as registry synchronization and adding information to crash reports.
  • An advanced rendering API designed for compatibility with optimization mods and graphics overhaul mods.

Also check out Fabric Loader, the (mostly) version-independent mod loader that powers Fabric. Fabric API is a mod like any other Fabric mod which requires Fabric Loader to be installed.

For support and discussion for both developers and users, visit the Fabric Discord server.

Using Fabric API to play with mods

Make sure you have installed fabric loader first. More information about installing Fabric Loader can be found here.

The downloaded jar file should be placed in your mods folder.
