Rebirth of the Night is one of the best mods out there, and in my opinion, the CURRENT peak of the voxel survival sandbox genre. In my opinion, base raids and base defense are two of the best mechanics to have in a game like minecraft, yet its literally NEVER used.

Realism is usually a negative aspect for me with most mods, but ROTN handles it super well and the game is still fun despite it.

By far the best part about this pack is it not relying on progression to fuel gameplay. This is an issue I have with most packs and vanilla where they're super focused in the goals, and not what's inbetween said goals.

I have a few issues with the pack, and they are as follows:

  • villages are a bit op, I based near one and had barely any enemies spawn. Only died because of accidentally killing a cow in front of guards
  • zombie/skeleton horses should not be ridable by the player, I was suffocated twice because of this.
  • performance is really bad sometimes, I have a 1 second long lag spike for multiple minutes sometimes. I have a mid grade pc as well that can run minecraft uncapped above 500 fps (and runs rotn around the same as well)

After the 2.7 branch the quality went down the drain and has not recovered since. Placeholder galore, bugfixes maybe every few years assuming there is even any intent to fix them to begin with (fex: All the bugs related to alcohol brewing ect) That the dev team has chosen to pretend to not see reports/images about. And there are so many bugs now... Polished/functional systems are non-existent and if any happens to slip through it gets re-worked into a placeholders or outright removed.

Technical things aside the pack just feels like it's in middle of identity crisis. Ever since replacing Invasions with Onslaught (and later Hordes) it feels like pack is trying to re-invent itself, most likely to be more like RLCraft, which is unfortunate. Music is mostly miss, textures are mostly fine but some custom items such as blood vessel (lazy peoples version of mysterious vessel) look too low quality even for Minecraft.
"Progress" feels really arbitrary chase for bosses.

Dev team REALLY needs to take a look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha1rO0btVLU

Rebirth of the Night is a survival-focused Minecraft modpack that emphasizes deliberate, rewarding progression in a hostile and immersive world. Unlike most modpacks that hand you tools and freedom up front, RoTN forces you to claw your way forward. Progression is tightly controlled—dimensions, high-tier gear, and key resources are all boss-gated or locked behind specific milestones. Every achievement feels earned, not given.

One of its standout features is the game's dynamic escalation: the world reacts to you. Mob AI is significantly improved—enemies flank, break blocks, and behave with unnerving cunning. As if that weren’t enough, every 9 or so in-game days, full-scale mob hordes descend upon you. These events ratchet up the tension and keep you from ever feeling safe, even in your own base.

Balancing is sharp: food, light, and shelter are strategic concerns, not afterthoughts. The game encourages planning, exploration, and caution over brute force. However, some long-standing issues remain, such as the ToroQuest mod’s king quests being bugged and unfinishable. It’s understandable—RoTN’s devs didn’t create that mod and fixing it would be a challenge—but it’s still a persistent blemish on an otherwise polished and deeply engaging experience.

For players looking for progression-driven survival with teeth, Rebirth of the Night is one of the most compelling and punishingly satisfying modpacks out there.

so i was just randomly scrolling throught curseforge modpacks and stumbled onto Rebirth of the Night and let me tell you i couldnt come back.
I love this modpack so much, the ambiance and the soundtrack fits so good with the game.
The modpack sure is challenging but rewarding and i always loved the fact they made the caves have a way horror ambiance and fell than any other modpack.
I guess the only bad thing about this is the performance and stability,i havent saw a lot of bugs and even if i saw they're only insignificant but it can be a bit laggy sometimes.

With new combat system, this modpack is definitely great to play along with your friends, though it's pretty hard to fight the hordes in very begin of the game. However, the performance is a little unstable

you can see the developers of the modpack is really worked hard for this in every aspect of the modpack and that worked flawlessly. Absolute banger of a pack if you want some challange and like the base defense.

To say that this is a modpack is honestly an understatement, this plays and feels like a whole new game. Completely custom aesthetics, progression, difficulty, and much more. However, not all the aspects of this new game are perfect. The difficulty and tedium of death, even though its meant to be not much of an inconvenience- is excruciatingly annoying. The most prevalent of these examples would be how it's' 'grave' system works. It uses Quark's totem of holding system- but set to the Dark Souls mode. Basically, after you've died once, your last totem will be destroyed. So if you're ever caught in a death loop due to something tedious or annoying (cough cough GOBLIN SCAVENGERS) all of your items are as good as gone. Another issue is its Onslaughts, though its a problem they've already addressed, the mod just... don't work. Mobs wont spawn, they'll spawn in stupid places, they won't end and the progress bar will just continue on past its endpoint, ect ect ect... Also the load times though no fault of the developer are kinda brutal. (Then again I'm used to more modern packs that have very few small load times soooo zoomer brain I suppose lmao)

TL:DR Great pack but not without its flaws, has potential to become amazing.

The only real complaint is that guidebook is incomplete so past nether you have zero fucking clue where to go now.
Cant wait for 3.2.

First modpack in my life that i played up to and even past day 100 mark. Really enjoyable.

Protip: Calamarigold sword has a very cool effect if you use it near your spawn with empty inventory. Helped me get diamond set pre nether.

I've been playing modded Minecraft for years and vanilla for twice as long. I have done my fair share of research regarding Minecraft modpacks and to say I am content with ROTN and its gameplay is an understatement. ROTN has a very well structured progression system. If you are looking for a modpack that you will have to grind long hours to progress that includes high risk and high reward, ROTN is perfect. I've been playing the modpack for a few months and I am just now reaching the endgame. ROTN has bosses that gatekeep parts of the game which make progression hard but also makes you confront possible death. Some simple luxuries that are usually easier to get become more expensive and something you will appreciate more when you are able to get them. It is a large modpack so there are some quirks and instability. My main issue is the end game, the game is still in development so there is not much meat to the VERY end of the game but that still leaves loads of gameplay before you even come near to the end though. Nothing in life is perfect and this modpack is no exception, but it sure is close to it.

Fear the dark. Defy the odds. Embrace the night. In an ever-changing world, Bravery is vital & arrogance is lethal.

Overview

Inspired by games like Terraria, 7 Days to Die, Vintage Story, Valheim, and more, Rebirth of the Night is an extensively customized modpack with its own progression system, mechanics, lore, and art.

What is Rebirth of the Night?

icon with blood moon covered in ice

Rebirth of the Night is built upon the goal of recreating the fresh, new, and exciting rush you got from playing Minecraft for the first time; whether it's exploring caves, fighting new enemies, or plundering loot, while also completely re-imagining and expanding the game, ensuring that feeling never gets old. A recurring theme in RotN is that your actions have consequences; you are playing in a living, breathing world that will react to your actions... for better or worse. Monsters will mine and build to get to you, combat is dynamic and fluid, danger and dread are amplified, seasons change, night and day cycles are longer, the early game will make you scavenge for survival in new ways, and every world-changing event you cause has repercussions and rewards. Your skills in all aspects of gameplay will be tested, but in a way that supports many different playstyles. Rebirth of the Night was originally inspired and created as a result of Whitelight's video essay series critiquing Minecraft; it has kept true to the general premise of those videos, while slowly blooming its own identity throughout the years.

How Rebirth of the Night Differs From Other Modpacks

Fanfare Icon

Rebirth of the Night completely overhauls both Minecraft and mods popular and obscure through the use of extensive scripting, custom mods and forks, custom textures and models, and much more. While fundamentally, RotN just a collection of mods, those mods serve as building blocks and tools to deliver a unique and refined experience. The modpack is heavily supported by custom artwork, models, sprites, fan made content, extensive lore, top-down approaches to mechanics and content, and of course, the hard work from developers that makes the mods used possible in the first place. Thanks to many community supporters, we're able to fund, design and deliver awesome content, see through on our visions, and create an all-new experience.

Our Design Principles

verisimilitude (noun); the appearance of truth, the quality of seeming to be true

The top priority in designing Rebirth of the Night is to ensure verisimilitude (pronounced like this). It might be hard to pronounce, but it's easy to understand! Rebirth of the Night aims to reach a level of believability where it doesn't feel like a modpack, but rather a unified game. This is simultaneously achieved and being achieved through removal of duplicate items from different mods, retexturing and renaming content to differentiate them, creating a lore that envelops all content, and much more. We strive to attain quality control and consistency at the same level as Mojang or any other game studio would; however, we do not consider RotN to be Vanilla+, tech, magic, or any specific label. We use any content from mods as we see fit, and disable anything not needed. A mod you'd find in one modpack could also be in RotN, implemented completely differently. Any mod has the possibility to find its way into Rebirth of the Night, provided that it's high quality enough and configurable. Anything from the most esoteric technology to the most ferocious monsters to intricate structures all can have a place in RotN, if it can be brought under the greater umbrella of verisimilitude. As lead developer Foreck once said:

"RotN is an overhaul of the vanilla experience, it doesn't care for the original game rules nor does any rule define it. Labels such as tech or magic are meaningless to me, I'll add whatever I see fit to RotN; and it will work in tandem with all other systems. If something isn't compatible with something else, it will be because of in-world justifications, not because some Factorio hobo or DnD stoner wizard said that both things belong to different genres.

If someone says RotN is a magic pack, I don't care
If someone says RotN is a tech pack, I don't care
If someone says RotN is a kitchen sink, I couldn't care less
If someone wants to weigh RotN against any other pack, be my guest, I don't give two shits

Tech or magic, they are inconsequential to the philosophy of the pack.

A Living World

Form & Function

One of Minecraft’s biggest strengths is its ability to allow the player to form (read: build) whatever they like. But more often than not, this form is just that, form. A castle you spent hours building is beautiful, and the process is a reward in and of itself... but you never need to build anything more than a small shack or a hold in the ground to survive against the dangers of the world. There is nothing for the castle to protect, and nothing to attack it.

RotN strives to reinforce the pleasure of realizing a beautiful build by making building practical again; a more dangerous world makes a strong base essential to survival.

Monsters can mine, dig, and build to reach to you. Enhanced behaviors make for dynamic threats: creepers targeting you past thin walls and blowing your cover up, skeletons with deadly accuracy, and generally new monster mechanics that appear as you progress, challenging your existing defenses.

Features

moon icon   Night Reborn

The original foundation of RotN: The night time is much harder to skip, lasts longer than vanilla, and offers unique mechanics. From deadly blood moons to dazzling falling star showers, players are thrown into the night to survive and thrive. Each sunset is a trial, a new fear to be conquered.

progression icon

  Gamestages

Reaching certain milestones will trigger gamestages, which in turn changes your game. Your world progresses with you, never idly or without you. New monsters will appear, new locations become accessible, new resources are available, new recipes unlock, and new difficulties will be reached.

combat icon  Combat Overhaul

Magic & might, fort defenses, armor set bonuses, and revised combat mechanics are at your disposal when fighting dangers of the night. Heavily modified combat creates highly dynamic interactions; how will you fend off cave dwellers, night creatures, and bosses?

monster manual icon  Monsters Galore

With a plethora of unique monsters to find and fight, you will always find something dangerous yet rewarding lurking around every corner. Monsters offer a wide variety of combat styles to keep you on your toes and a wide array of unique loot to keep your coffers filled.

boss summon icon  Boss Progression

With a extensive boss progression tree, you will face a gauntlet of challenges as you unlock ever increasing strength to fend off the night. Each boss offers a unique combat encounter with unique rewards; unforeseen consequences may result from their defeat...

invasion icon  Invasions

Monsters will invade in hordes, seeking you out during the night and attacking with any means necessary, breaking down walls, coordinating assaults, and mining through stone to eliminate you. Arm up, fortify your walls, and defend yourself! Invasions will be difficult, but your valiant efforts will be rewarded.

seasons icon  Seasons & Weather

As the days march on, the weather and seasons will change, affecting your world. Crops will fail, snow will fall, and new monsters will rise. Survival is more than just defeating monsters - you must survive the world, too.

dimension stack icon  Layered Dimensions

Some dimensions reside in the same plane of existence, on top of each other.  You must travel far above and down deep to reach them. Be careful, though; your actions can have unforeseen consequences…

realm icon   Living World

Towns being invaded; bosses guarding their domains; dungeons to unlock; biomes affected by seasons. From simple changes in weather to extreme world-shattering occurrences, the world is far from static. It lives.

community icon  Community Support

Through collaboration, suggestions, supporters and contests, you - the player - help shape Rebirth of the Night. Many of our sprites, models, music, ideas, mods and more come from the community. Your feedback matters!

Fear the dark. Defy the odds. Embrace the night. In an ever-changing world, bravery is vital... and arrogance is lethal.

Inspired by Terraria, 7 Days to Die, and more, Rebirth of the Night is a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack with its own progression system, lore, mechanics, and art. It's built with the idea of remembering the central themes of what made Minecraft enjoyable and expanding them in every way, increasing the overall risk and reward as you progress.

“Rebirth of the Night”: Do you remember what playing Minecraft for the first time felt like? The caves were unnerving, the monsters were dangerous, and the nights were unpredictable and unforgiving... Most of all, everything was unknown, and discovering something new felt exciting. There was so much to learn and experience: you never knew what was around that bend in a cave, what was on the other side of that portal, or what would await you down the hall of a stronghold. This modpack aims to bring danger, mystery, and excitement back to exploring and thriving in the world.

What Rebirth of the Night is: The design philosophy of our modpack is to create an experience where adventure, conquest, progression, and survival are all intertwined. This pack is built upon the goal of keeping Minecraft close to the original concept of survival, while also completely re-imagining the game. A recurring theme in this pack is that your actions have consequences: you are playing in a living, breathing world that will react to your actions. Mobs will mine and build to get to you, combat is expanded upon, danger and dread are amplified, seasons change, the early game will make you scavenge for survival, and every world-changing event you cause has repercussions... Your skills in all aspects of gameplay will be tested, but in a way that supports many different play styles.

How we are different from other packs: Rebirth of the Night completely overhauls Minecraft and many mods both popular and obscure through the use of mods such as CraftTweaker and its add-ons, Set Bonus, Gamestages, InControl, Requious Frakto, Biome Tweaker, and many more. This pack is harder than vanilla, but in a way that scales with your progression rather than making things tedious and discouraging from the moment you start a new world. This means that all aspects of gameplay have increased difficulty, including crafting, mining, exploring, farming, and of course, survival. All of the mods we use interact with one another in a way that is unique to this pack and our internal lore as well as unified vision helps creating a belieavble world.

Guides and Tips:

 ___________

Features:

Survival & Combat:

- Much more in-depth early-mid game, custom edited for RotN. (Better With Mods, Pyrotech)

- Mobs will now invade your base and have vastly improved AI! (Epic Siege ModZombie AwarenessSpecial AIRough Mobs Revamped)

- Warhammers, battleaxes, maces, spears, and more! (Spartan Weaponry, Spartan Compatibility)

- A combat overhaul with many set bonuses, proper duel wielding, Terraria-like class paths, and much more. Every single piece of craftable armor has a practical use and has one or more set bonus paths associated with it, as well as many weapons. There's something for everyone here! (Various, including Set Bonuses)

Lunar events (including blood moons!) and invasions, provided by our custom-built mods! Zombie hordes! Illagers! And more! Balanced and scales with you. Just a way to keep you on your toes and keep the game interesting! (Nyx, Onslaught)

Sleeping and hunger rework! Sleeping is enabled, but it comes at a price! Skipping a night drastically reduces your hunger, and if your hunger is too low, you'll die in your sleep! Make sure you're in a well-lit and safe area too, or else mobs will attack you while you're asleep! Also, there are many times in the game in which you can not sleep, such as during bloodmoons, invasions and thunderstorms! (Let Me Sleep, Hunger Overhaul) (don't worry we significantly tweaked Hunger Overhaul so hunger is not tedious)

- In-depth scaling difficulty! Using Game Stages, we have custom-made an entire difficulty progression system. Similar to Terraria, making a big advancement will enable spawning of more difficult mobs in the world. This occurs many times throughout the conquest playthrough. Players who don't partake in conquest will not notice difficulty increase over time. One example is that killing the Ender Dragon significantly increases difficulty by spawning much harder mobs in the Overworld and other dimensions. It's essentially Terraria's hard mode, but custom made for this pack.

Caves & Underground:

- Biome-specific caves and fancy new caves with underground seas and great lava pools (Cave Generator, Quark)

- New stone types (Underground Biomes)

- Several useful new ores (Simple Ores, Ore Stone Variants)

- More difficult mobs the lower and further you go (Various)

- Chest and crate loot that contain rare accessories, beware of Mimics though... (Various)

World & Exploration:

- Entirely overhauled world gen! The world is not crowded with structures like most other exploration modpacks, but the variety of structures you will find are in the hundreds! You will always find something new each play-through. (Various)

Dynamically changing seasons that affect crops, animals and weather! Make sure you stockpile food before the winter! (Serene Seasons)

- Exploration-based progression! The further you travel, the better loot you will find!

- Accessories with magic abilities and modifiers! (Bountiful Baubles)

Dimensions:

- The Nether, entirely reworked from the ground up and includes a new boss! It sticks with Mojang's original intent of it being a barren wasteland and extremely dangerous. No outrageous biomes, massive clutter, or useless ores. All Nether ores have a valid purpose, and all Nether mobs are unique and balanced. Every single piece of the Nether was looked at and examined in extreme detail. (BetterNether, NetherEx, and more)

- The Beneath, enter it by mining below y=0. A truly immense underground dimension. It has unique ores, structures, and creatures! Beware of the darkness, though... (The Beneath)

- The End, with many new ender-like mobs, biomes, ore, structures, and more, The End will surely give you an experience like no other, all while sticking to the feeling of the emptiness and void. (End: Reborn, Stygian End)

- The Aether, a beautiful realm of sky islands filled with mythical creatures, truly unique ores, and three new dungeons for you to conquer. (Aether Legacy)

- The Twilight Forest (use a Ghast Queen Tear to open the portal), changed to be an end-game dimension, the Twilight Forest is filled with danger and mystery at every turn, as well as loads of epic dungeons and late game loot. Beware that this is the home of the dragons, which are the most powerful foe in this modpack. (The Twilight Forest)

Custom Soundtrack:

- Over 200 hand-picked tracks from many talented artists.

- Similar to Terraria and other games, music changes depending on what you are doing. For example, the boss you are fighting, the dimension you are, the biome, the time of day, the structure, the weather, and more!

- It's super immersive!

___________

Read this if you want to use shaders:

Many shaders will not work. These have been proven to work:

- Tea Shaders (highly recommended)

- Sildur's Enhanced Default

- Builder's Quality of Life Shaders

When you enable shaders, do so in the main menu. The game will freeze for awhile. If it's still frozen after 5 minutes, reload the game. The shader should be applied after you have reloaded.
