I mean its alright, old but gold yk. not 5/5 thats for sure, its age shows, but it was good for what it was. I would not recommend it nowadays just because of the gap in quality nowadays, but if you experienced it when it was fresh, you had a good time.

What is it ?

The betweenlands is a mod adding a derelict swampy dimension between worlds;
It has pretty and cool visuals using custom shaders by default, tons of cool building blocks and particles, has ambience/sounds effects which are unique and add to the immersion, cool soundtrack (boss music included within the mod by itself) and an overall creepy atmosphere.
It contains lore which is left open to interpretation through small notes or implied by the existence of structures and creatures.

What does it offer ?

A brand-new yet familiar survival experience with a progression system fully independent from the overworld, featuring unique survival mechanics such as the decay , tool corrosion and food sickness , challenge through its tough enemies, dungeons and bosses and a both pretty and eerie ambience.
It provides its own take on minecraft's systems (its own farming , brewing and repairing system among a few others, and even some brand-new re-thought weather ); and it is not hesitant to rethink its past ideas to better fit with the newer and updated mod features.
It encourages exploration, having multiple biomes with unique fauna, flora, and global generation quirks which make each area feel different enough while still keeping that swampy vibe; it also brings in new ways to travel the world through items ( Tongue grappling hook ) and vehicles ( Rowboat and Draeton ), and adds new companions to take with you on your journey ( Emberlings , Harlequin Toads and more !).

The cons of this mod would normally be the performance aspect of the mod itself, as even though it is quite well optimized for a mod of its scale, it has by default configs about shaders which can be too much to handle for a basic laptop, but those visual effects can be reduced or even fully disabled in the configs and it works fine (I would recommend disabling them if your computer can't handle shaders or visual effects in general, it really makes a big difference).
It is also of note that this is in general a pretty difficult mod which is not recommended to play for people looking for a more chill adventure (even if it can still be calm at times), and its focus on exploration might not appeal to some tech modpack enjoyers either, as most systems do require human intervention/maintenance and can't be automated forever (there are unofficial addons for that though, but that isn't the subject of this review).

In conclusion

It provides a haunting medieval swamp urbex experience, with a pretty yet dangerous environment which has content encouraging exploration.
Most things stay cohesive within the mod, as updates of the mod take into account what has been and what will be.
It is well documented as it has advancements hinting at the various areas, features and systems and an official detailed and up-to-date wiki, and that's not even counting all the little things such as how the mod tells you in which special block an item can be used in.
Finally, it has also plenty of niche details and hidden mob interactions, leaving the world full of surprises, to the point where I still discover mechanics and stuff about the mod, even though I played it for more than a couple hundred of hours at least (probably more).

I would like to add that this mod being my absolute favorite, its review might be somewhat biased, which is why I urge you to try it for yourself, after all, you might still like it despite its difficulty.

This mod not only add another dimension but it gives you a lore distributed in multiple letters that you can find around the world, mobs with very good animations and a very immersive environment thanks to its music and art that makes it feel like a part of vanilla Minecraft.

Not only that, but it makes everything you bring outside of its dimension (Food, weapons, armor...) useless, forcing the player to start from scratch in the dimension.

And to finish this review, it takes advantage of this to create a good progression system, with its own minerals, weapons, tools and armor in the adventure.

About

Description

The Betweenlands is a mod developed by the Angry Pixel modding group. This large and expansive mod adds a whole new dimension, along with a plethora of exciting new content that offers an exciting and challenging survival experience.

The Betweenlands dimension is a dark and mysterious realm where strange and monstrous creatures roam amongst the remnants of long lost civilisations, long since decayed. As dangerous as it is beautiful, there is much to explore and discover. The player must adapt their surroundings and keep their wits about them, or perish.

Features include -
  • A complete independent survival experience with hours of gameplay
  • A whole new dimension to survive in
  • Many new creatures and monsters to fight
  • Unique biomes and structures to explore and loot, from towering fortresses to scattered underground ruins
  • An extensive herblore system that allows you to create over 30 unique infusions from 14 different aspects found in plants
  • A unique farming system with several new crop types
  • Hundreds of new blocks to build with, including various machine blocks and a whole lot of plant life
  • Hundreds of new items, including lots of unique weapons and loot, complete tool and armour sets, plenty of food items, new raw materials, scraps of lore and more
  • Hundreds of new sounds, including immersive ambient tracks and dozens of music tracks
  • Lots of new mechanics, including food sickness, corrosion of tools, decay of the player, and a combat circle revolving around 3 new gem items
  • Randomly occurring events, including changes in the weather as well as sometimes more supernatural occurrences
  • Special built-in custom shader effects to make the worlds look even prettier
  • Multiplayer compatibility so you can survive with your friends
  • ...and much, more more!

Backstory -

During the time when the Overwold and Nether had just been born, this dimension existed as little other than an empty void between worlds. Over time, energy from the Overworld seeped into it through a rift, allowing life to spread. A race of people soon populated it, led by a powerful Great Druid. He and his followers wanted to harness the power of the Nether to use as a tool. However, when they opened up a portal, the dark energies surged through uncontrolled, causing corruption to spread. The inhabitants of The Betweenlands became Wights. Some of the Great Druid's followers managed to escape to the Overworld, however over time they became mad. The Great Druid himself became The Prime Wight. Doomed to rule over an empire of decay, any humanity left in him slowly faded away. After much time had passed, a traveler found their way to the dimension. And so your story begins...

How to survive -

The air is so foul that any creature breathing it slowly decays.  The realm has no day/night cycle.  Clocks, maps, redstone, flint and steel, and compasses are useless here. Due to the warm and wet environment of The Betweenlands, food from other dimensions rots when traveling through the portal to this dimension, becoming

Rotten Food.

As Flint and Steel cannot operate in the dimension, there is an alternative way to creating a fire. Simply hold right-click Moss, Cave Moss, or Thorns (either placed or dropped, both block and item forms work) with an Octine Ingot to light it on fire. The ingot will cause the plant to slowly build up flame until it turns into a fire block, without consuming the ingot in the process. This is essential for getting an Infuser started.

Torches will not work here, and you will require Sulfur Torches instead. Along with that, tools from other dimensions will be diminished in effectiveness in the Betweenlands, prompting the player to use the Betweenlands tools. However, Betweenlands tools in your inventory will undergo Corrosion.

How to get there -

The Betweenlands can be accessed by creating a Portal Tree. For more information on how to access the dimension, visit the How to get there page.

Environment -

The Betweenlands revolves around a swampy-like theme. It has a randomly generated, animated green sky dotted with mysterious, hazy stars. These skies have Auroras from time to time, one of the last sparks of happiness in the dimension. The once verdant soil retains a very dead green color.

The dimension is composed of Swamplands, Patchy Islands, Coarse Islands, Sludge Plains, Deep Waters, and Marshes. The Middle Gem Ores can be found within a couple of these biomes. These biomes are crawling with very thick and uncontrolled flora and fauna, and some contain remnants of long lost civilizations in the form of Ruins and Dungeons, among other mysterious structures. There are also larger landmarks, such as the Wight Fortress.

The Lake Caverns, or Pitstone layer of The Betweenlands. There you can find Valonite Ore, and Life Crystal Ore. Or perhaps something will find you first...

The Betweenlands's main tree type is the small Weedwood Tree, although you may find gigantic ones. The dimensions also provides Sap Trees, Rubber Trees and more.
The dimension carries a whole underground system with ores such as Sulfur Ore,Slimy Bone Ore, Octine Ore, Syrmorite Ore, Valonite Ore, and Life Crystal Ore. The caves themselves are often wide and house underground flora and dripping stalactites, along with echoing cave ambiance.

There are two main locations of the Betweenlands's underground structure: The Caverns and the Lake Caverns.

COMMON ISSUES

Common issues caused by OptiFine

  1. My screen is totally black!
This is a common issue when OptiFine is installed.
The "Fast Render" option in OptiFine causes our shaders to not work.
To fix this problem you can either set "Fast Render" to OFF
or disable the Betweenlands shaders in the Betweenlands config.
  2. Everything is invisible!
Newer versions of OptiFine have built-in shaders that
don't work well with our shaders. You can either disable the
Betweenlands shaders or disable the OptiFine shaders by going to the
main Minecraft directory, opening optionsshaders.txt and changing
    shaderPack=... to shaderPack=OFF.
  3. The mod crashes on startup in 1.7.10
The 1.7.10 version of the Betweenlands is incompatible with some
OptiFine versions. Try OptiFine HD U D3 instead which should
    work.

Other common issues

  1. The water is only yellow/brown/beige
Download the latest recommended version of Forge.
  2. Everything is black, invisible or looks strange
If you have any other mods installed that add shaders, make sure you either
disable the shaders of those mods, or disable the Betweenlands shaders (see 1.1)
  3. The sounds or music sometimes stop working
That's something we're still working on. If this happens to you, you
can fix it by pressing F3+T (might freeze the game for a few seconds)
    instead of restarting the game.
  4. This mod makes my game lag horribly!!1!
Try disabling the Betweenlands shaders (see 1.1). Some graphics cards,
especially integrated ones such as Intel HD Graphics, cannot handle the
    shaders well.
