Description
Capture Eggs
Mob catching for Minecraft 26.2 (Fabric). Throw a Capture Egg at a mob: the mob is gone and its vanilla spawn egg drops in its place. Place the spawn egg and the same mob comes back, with its name, its health, its colour, its owner, a villager's trades and everything else it had. Small mobs are caught almost every time, strong ones less often, hurt ones more easily. Bosses and the warden need an Ultra Capture Egg, a costly capture egg that catches them half the time. A tamed animal can only be caught by its owner. Everything is in its own creative tab, Capture Eggs.
"I didn't move the cow. I packed it."
Download
Get captureeggs-<version>.jar from CurseForge or the
GitHub releases and put it into mods/ on the client and the server, next to Fabric API. Requires Minecraft 26.2, Fabric Loader 0.19.3+ and Java 25.
The guide book
The Capture Eggs Guide is a book with a chapter for each egg and one on catching, with the recipes, in English and German. Craft it from a book and an egg, or take it from the creative tab. Right-click opens it, E or Escape closes it; the eggs' tabs are on the left, the topics' on the right.
This page follows the book chapter by chapter and adds the details that do not fit on its pages.

Getting Started
Capture Eggs turns mobs into spawn eggs and back.
- Craft capture eggs from eggs and an ender pearl.
- Throw one at a mob.
- Pick up its spawn egg and place it where the mob should live.
Capture Egg
An egg that holds a whole mob. It flies like a normal egg.
"Fits a horse. Don't ask how."
Crafting – four eggs around an ender pearl give four capture eggs:
E E = egg
E P E P = ender pearl
E
Use
- Right-click throws the egg. When it hits a mob, the mob turns into its spawn egg, which drops where the mob stood. The spawn egg's tooltip names the mob it holds.
- Right-click a block with the spawn egg: the mob appears there. On a monster spawner it sets the spawner's mob instead, like any spawn egg, and is used up: the caught mob itself is gone then, the spawner makes new ones of its kind.
- A dispenser throws capture eggs too.
- An egg that hits a block or a mob it cannot catch drops again, so you can pick it up. In creative mode it does not, since throwing it did not use it up. A mob that breaks free keeps the egg: it is gone.
Ultra Capture Egg
A capture egg set in diamond, gold, an end crystal and a nether star. It catches what no other egg can: bosses and the warden.
"The wither fit. Barely."
Crafting – a capture egg in the middle, golden apples left and right, an end crystal above, a nether star below, diamond blocks in the corners:
D E D D = block of diamond E = end crystal
A C A A = golden apple C = capture egg
D N D N = nether star
Use
- Throw it like a capture egg. It catches 50 % of the mobs it hits (
ultraCaptureChance), however strong. A mob that breaks free keeps the egg. - The ender dragon is caught when the egg hits any part of its body. In the End, catching it counts as beating it: the exit portal and the dragon egg appear as after a kill.
- The other rules still hold: someone else's pet stays, and so does a mob without a spawn egg.
Catching
Every mob with a spawn egg can be caught, with a few exceptions.
What the egg keeps: everything the mob saves: name, health, age, colour and variant, saddle and armour, chest contents, owner, a villager's job and trades. A leash drops as a lead. The released mob never despawns, so a caught zombie stays where you put it. Riders are thrown off before the mob is caught.
Rules
- Bosses and the warden only with an ultra capture egg: the tag
captureeggs:uncatchable(ender dragon, wither, warden, elder guardian and thec:bossestag). A data pack can add more. Mobs without a spawn egg (the illusioner, say) cannot be caught at all. - A tamed animal can only be caught by its owner. Someone else's egg bounces off and drops again.
- With the health rule switched on in the config, the book says so on this page, with the number.
The thrower sees above the hotbar why a mob was not caught, and the chance when it broke free.
Chance
Not every hit catches. A capture egg's chance halves for every 15 hearts (30 health) the mob has left. A mob that breaks free keeps the egg. With the default config:
| Mob | Health | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken | 4 | 91 % |
| Cow | 10 | 79 % |
| Zombie, villager | 20 | 63 % |
| Zombie hurt down to 5 | 5 | 89 % |
| Horse (up to) | 30 | 50 % |
| Iron golem | 100 | 10 % |
Hurt a mob first and it is easier to catch. An ultra capture egg catches half the time, whatever the mob. The book shows the numbers of the current config.
Config
config/captureeggs.json, read by the server:
{
"captureChance": 100,
"halfChanceHealth": 30.0,
"ultraCaptureChance": 50,
"maxHealthPercent": 100,
"ownerOnly": true
}
captureChance: a capture egg's chance in percent against a mob with no health left; the highest it gets.halfChanceHealth: health points (2 per heart) that halve a capture egg's chance. Higher makes catching easier.ultraCaptureChance: an ultra capture egg's chance in percent, the same for every mob.maxHealthPercent: a mob is only caught at or below this percent of its health; above it the egg drops again and the thrower is told to weaken the mob first.ownerOnly: tamed animals can only be caught by their owner. Withfalse, anyone can catch them; they keep their owner.
