This mod used to be the thing that made caves more than just boring tunnels with no life or shape to them, especially on 1.12. Yung's caves basically did caves and cliffs before caves and cliffs, however that does mean on new versions it is a bit less impactful.

On new versions, Yung's caves can be less impactful, but can still be a nice to have in cases where caves and cliffs doesn't quite cut it. I don't often use this mod on new versions anymore, and my review is left mostly for the old versions as I feel it is a disservice to rate the mod down because it was so good mojang implemented half of its ideas as vanilla features.

If you are playing 1.16- use this mod for interesting caves, on modern you might need to see if it fits your pack as not all packs need it anymore.

A good mod to improve caves generation in old minecraft versions before the 1.17. I recommend it use it together with other "Cave mods" like"Darker Depths" or "Subterranean Wilderness", or Quark with the Cave generation features activated.

I personally used in 1.16.5 and I recommend it.

What is this?

YUNG's Better Caves completely overhauls Minecraft's cave systems. Caves are small and unassuming at the surface, but the deeper you go, the crazier things get. You'll find lava caverns, underground lakes and rivers, flooded caverns, and more!

Better Caves is the most powerful and customizable Minecraft cave mod, with dozens of options and support for dimension-specific configurability. Want the Nether to have some worm-like caves? You got it. Want The Beneath to be spotted with treacherous lakes filled with poison? Easy. For information on how to use the extensive configuration, see the wiki!

If you're looking for a Vanilla+ experience, Better Caves does that as well. Check out the Official Presets!

Compatibility

YUNG's Better Caves is intended to be fully compatible with as many worldgen mods as possible. The following are known compatibility issues:

Concurrent Chunk Management Engine (C2ME) for 1.20.1

Set [threadedWorldGen].enabled to "false". Otherwise, you may have issues with pockets of lava spawning within water regions. Note that this applies to C2ME on 1.20.1 ONLY - it is not necessary to make this change on 1.21.1.
